CWU responds to Royal Mail results
Billy Hayes, general secretary, said: “The results demonstrate that Royal Mail can make a profit while remaining a public service.
“We expect the government to ensure that such good results are supported by retaining Royal Mail as an integrated and wholly publicly owned service. Proposals to sell off and break up the group will challenge its success and service.
“We would like to see government build on the success of these results by awarding the post office card account (POCA) contract to the Post Office which will help to ensure the sustainability of the post office network.”
Dave Ward, deputy general secretary, said: “The agreement between CWU and Royal Mail last year is what has led to the improvement in performance and in turn to increased profits.
“The government review is crucial to resolving the future of the Universal Service Obligation, the pensions crisis and modernising Royal Mail for future challenges. Modernisation needs to be in the interest of customers and employees and not just the company."
