Seniority - Broken Service

Post by digitalangel »

I first worked at Royal Mail March 1998 - July 2001 and had to quit for many complicated reasons.

Now years later, I have returned.

Even though I have given the company over 3yrs service, I get no recognition yet people who take unpaid leave for (x) months/years can rack up their seniority whilst away?!

I've now done another 7months and if I'd bene able to stay in the job, I'd be hitting over 9yrs. Instead I start at the bottom again.

Peoples thoughts?

Hmmmm At the end of the day,if you leave, you leave.
The other thing you're talking about i presume is sabbatical, which is obviously different.

I know of no job where you leave, come back and the 2 bits are added together.

And although you say you'd be hitting 9 years, you wouldn't of actually done 9 years service as well.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Seems unfair that I have given the company over 3yrs service and I couldn't take time off for sabbatical, due to illness, but get no recognition for the time I have served.

Whereas other people can go travelling, etc for a year or so (unpaid), without having to leave, due to reasons beyond their control and also gain seniority whilst away...

sorry to hear that you felt you had to leave thru illness. i do agree with you though that extended career breaks are seen to be an unfair way of racking up your seniority. we have a few in our office. to date one person has been off for 3 years. some of the newbies do not know that these people exist. however a change in the employment law now means that when they return to work they are not guaranteed the job back that they were doing....
bit of a gamble really. you could end up doing 40 hours in a different office in your area in a totally different job. If you don't accept it you will be turning down your contract. (bye bye). everyone move up the list. hang on in there.
