If they don't even have the staff to cover the normal work - how are they going to offer people EVR/VR (without getting into the legal aspect that to be made redundant your job has to no longer exist).

They'll cover the Duties with Agency. They've been doing that where I am, for quite a while now. They've just given out some more EVR, even though we have approximately a 50/50 ratio of Agency to Permanent Posties, in Processing. Whenever we challenge them about it, we're told: It's just that we are busy at the moment, we don't need so many Duties. :arrrghhh :no no

What's worse, though. Is that there's no shortage of people wanting to take the EVR. So the managers always throw that back at us, whenever we complain about the situation.

Strange people. How much of a wake-up call must that be?
RM may not be perfect, but some minimum wage job with unpaid sick and little job security doesn't seem very attractive in exchange for a few thousand quid.
Maybe they'd be like those other sad people who leave in disgust , and then you see them back after a couple of months in an Agency hi-vis, saying how much they missed it and how they'd wished they'd never left..

Or maybe they are not that stupid and have got better employment with improved wages and terms, like the 5% of my office who left in the last couple of months and not looked back.
"best thing I've ever done"
"I miss the people but thats all"
"how do you stick it there, thought you would be long gone"
"God I wish I'd done it sooner"
So far not a single regret or returnee, will keep you posted.

And good luck to them IF they've found that "better job",but unfortunately there aren't that many unskilled jobs paying wages even approaching RM's level.

Then again, human nature being what it is, most are hardly likely to admit they've made a mistake in leaving even if they felt they had..

I've not seen any of them back as Agency yet (we've lost a lot of people over the last couple of years), but you never know. There was one bloke, who Retired, and then came back as Agency, for quite a while afterwards. But he didn't want to leave in the first place, so it's not really the same thing.

you'd be surprised how many well educated Posties there are. Just because we do supposedly unskilled Jobs, doesn't mean that we ARE unskilled. :hmmmm

Well said. Wonder how you define unskilled ,what could you include? Running fast in a straight line;kicking a ball;adding up; buying and selling nothing for profit;closing 7,500 PO's ?

Just thought that I had to reply took VR from my last company after 37 years of working nightshift it was a real crap company but it paid the morgage and was stuck in a rut. After joining RM not looked back. I work in small rural office with a good bunch of lads and DOM ok and has just taken me on permanent although I am on a 35 hour week I get by and wish I had joined RM sooner . Looking at jobs in this area they are just low paid crap jobs.

How bizarre...for the amount of work we do and the importance of it (the world seems to end when theres no post) I feel we are paid a very low wage indeed.

The job may be unskilled, as you put it, but why then is there a shocking staff turnover? Many people try it and hate it due to the early starts, the physical aspect and, when you first start, the pressure to get the job done (plus plenty more resons)

I defninitely think we deserve and should expect a decent livable wage well above £300 take home for doing this. Dont put yourselves down or compare yourselves to a Tesco shelf stacker...what we do is an essential service and should be rewarded as such.

I did consider VR at one point twice, as was said before by some members regarding ex postmen, I have met ex postmen who have taken VR, some where losers in that they used the money to pay off debts, but no jobs, one ended up in a homeless hostel, , the ones that did get jobs, some private companies made sure they got their pound of flesh for their money, some got really good jobs, I do know of one who set up his own business and is doing very well.
Its down to what you make of it.

as for me, I have decided now is not the time for me to go, I have been in the job 20 years and have built up lots of grandfather rights and reserved rights in my wages as well as 20 years of Pension, so for me, no, not yet, I have seen a lot of changes in this job, the good old days are now long gone, its been killed off by some of the members rushing round, starting early, using cars etc , all we can do now is defend our jobs by doing it properly and reducing personal stress for yourself in the process, I intend to take my time and not rush. :cuppa

It's not down to how hard you work, or how essential your work is, but something much more fundamental, namely the immutable Law of Supply and Demand.
Anyone who works in a job where there are others ready to step in and and do the work with little (or, as it appears these days, NO) training cannot command high wages.
It's why Ronaldo's on £175000 a week, and the local McBurger flipper's on legal minimum wages.
