since before we actually went on strike i/ve been receiving messages from google alert,these i started to receive after i asked google for information re royal mail dispute, today my alert is full of items on the universal service, it appears that in order to rectify the downward trend in profits,something has to be done re- the universal service as this is being used as the cause of all our problems,its stated in several of the articles that we currently lose 6p an item on stamped mail, surely a partial solving of the problem would be to charge the "competition" a more realistic price for our involvement in the delivery of "their" mail,at the end of the day these companies will never deliver the mail themselves, they neither have the infrastructure nor the will to take it on. the government and the regulator between them are creating vast profits for these companies off our backs,if we as royal mail dont either increase the cost or get rid of the second class letter then rest assured the "competition will when privatisation comes about. favourite saying from managers at the moment is, the volume of mail is down today. beware this means i'm not paying overtime
