Royal Mail and Ford have partnered to trial a new city-friendly approach to parcel delivery in Manchester. The purpose of the trial was to examine whether multi-modal delivery using Ford’s routing software could help Royal Mail to increase its foot-based deliveries of larger parcels in urban areas.

Ford’s software helped Royal Mail to use fewer vans in the trial area. The software enabled several posties to make deliveries with one vehicle supporting them. It identified safe, convenient locations for the handover of parcels to postmen and postwomen who then made deliveries to a mix of high-rise, business, and residential buildings. During the trial, postmen and postwomen used a smartphone app that provided the location of the van and showed the most efficient routes to deliver the parcels. The process resulted in fast and efficient deliveries, whilst maintaining human interaction at the point of delivery, ensuring trust on the doorstep.

The trial took place in the M4 postcode area of Manchester. This is ahead of Manchester launching its Clean Air Zone next year, with daily van charges coming into effect from 2023.

Using Ford’s software – Mode:Link – and specially built parcel trolleys, the trial helped Royal Mail to reduce the number of parcel vans needed in the city centre each day. Ford’s software enabled postmen and postwomen to meet delivery vans at coordinated points and deliver parcels around the M4 postcode area on foot.

Actually the more I think about it the more I like it:
The marriage of a smartphone app and the traditional role of the rag and bone man.

Obviously a few quid could also be made and that could be used to smarten up offices - pay for a cleaner that sort of thing or put a new baize on the pool table.

What next, will they trial a robotic delivery service: load up the trolleys and off they go on predetermined walk (using RoN), with the postie meeting the trolley at first address and taking the parcel to front door

Chief operating officer, Achim Dunnwald, said: ‘We are continuously looking at opportunities to reduce our emissions, alongside delivering convenience to our customers.”

During the trial, van usage for the delivery routes involved decreased by 50 per cent, whilst daily vehicle mileage decreased by 33 per cent, resulting in a reduction in CO2e emissions per parcel.

Achim also said only 50% of the parcels got stolen whilst the postman was inside a block of flats whilst the other 50% were destroyed by the lack of protection from the pouring rain, What a joke

To make things more efficient for us....

1. Sell and fit parcel delivery bins that customers can purchase from RM so we can just throw parcels into those.

2. From 2023 onwards require all customers to have a letterbox that can fit A3 letters through and are at least an inch wide. If no letterbox this size then refuse to deliver there. The amount of times i have to waste time knocking to hand people Christmas cards is ridiculous. Some have postboxes from year 1874.

Also require all letterboxes to be set at minimum height 450mm maximum height 1200mm above ground level (same as building regs require for electrical sockets and controls) No obstructions to be permitted within 600mm radius of the letterbox ie no plant pots, hanging baskets, banners, flags, Christmas wreaths, toys, etc. Letterbox and door number to be marked in contrast to surrounding area. Door number to be marked on the flap at least 75mm high and in a standard roman or sans serif font. Premises with closed gates to have same standard of delivery point set outside the gates. Premises with animals to have closed gates
More issues like durability, water resistance etc are covered in British Standard BS EN13724
These should be basic H&S regulations in this era of home deliveries
I am really annoyed since I started working for RMG by all the crappy obstacles and difficulties which a postie meets trying to deliver mail. And all these problems can be fixed by some simple clear regulations which would also create loads of business opportunities to provide and fit compatible boxes
