Re: Van driving
It's a legal obligation under the Road Traffic Act that you are assessed and passed capable of driving the vehicle and that Royal Mail hold the required paperwork to prove it.newpostyco13 wrote: ↑26 Feb 2021, 16:53just a quick question im driving a van without having training is this ok?

Re: Van driving
Only drive vehicles and operate equipment on which you have been properly trained.
To drive certain vehicles drivers must have received change-over training delivered by a qualified coach/trainer...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Van driving
He would have been assessed when he had his DVLA driving test. There is no other obligation under the Road Traffic Act if he holds the correct category on his license.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑26 Feb 2021, 17:03It's a legal obligation under the Road Traffic Act that you are assessed and passed capable of driving the vehicle and that Royal Mail hold the required paperwork to prove it.newpostyco13 wrote: ↑26 Feb 2021, 16:53just a quick question im driving a van without having training is this ok?

The legal obligation under the Road Traffic Act is placed on an employer fleet operation.Grumpyoldmailman wrote: ↑26 Feb 2021, 17:40He would have been assessed when he had his DVLA driving test. There are certain control measures that have to be in place to comply with the law, one is regular mandated and recorded vehicle checks and the other is properly recorded driver assessment.

Re: Van driving
I asked this question as im also fairly new. I got told that due to no van sharing, at the moment the usual driving assessments that normally take place aren't happening. And as long as I'd watched the right safety videos etc then I'd be fine. Not sure how correct this is, but this is what was said to me...

Re: Van driving
For ease of reference and for the avoidance of doubt, you can not drive a Royal Mail vehicle until you have had the necessary training, or as it's called, a change over. It is company policy.
A guy comes in, you go for a drive, and 99% of you will pass.
Watching a video or reading some s**t does not cover it.

Re: Van driving
We've not had changeovers in our office for nearly a year, probably close to 100 new starts including agency going out in vans all the time.

Re: Van driving
About a month ago, on an odd occasion when I was doing my lapsing like a good boy, I saw a bloke with a bundle of mail and one of our bags on his shoulder, scratching his head on the other side of the road and generally looking lost. No uniform, so deduced he was a newbie.
I nipped across, gave him the help and advice he needed. During the course of the conversation I gleaned that this was his third day on the job and the RM van he was driving was parked at the end of the road.
I doubt he'd completed a changeover in three days.
Sometimes it just feels like nobody gives a toss about anything at the moment.
Unless I miss a tracked...then the world tilts on its axis apparently.

Re: Van driving
Note to screws looking in, Bob or Jane goes out in a van without training and the proper paperwork filed.
Bob/Jane has a bad day and either kills or seriously injures someone.
HSE gets involved and the HSE dude is a stickler for crossing the T's and dotting the I's (Isn't that all of them?)
Finds the s**t and it all hits the fan.
Screw out of a job, screws's lacky out of a job, and possible corporate manslaughter charges bought up to him/her or the business.(Not 100% that a div manager can be brought up, but you never know)
Figures for the year ending June 2020 show:
there were 1,580 reported road deaths, a decrease of 14% compared to the previous year
there were 131,220 casualties of all severities, a decrease of 16%
the reduction in casualties is broadly in line with the fall in motor vehicle traffic of 14% over the same period

This was released early on in the epidemic relating to temp driver controls.
