A million pound a day
Does anyone else who values their job and actually is proud to work for Royal Mail wonder just how inept senior management is to allow this farcical Monday situation to continue. We are being paid to work a full shift and actually in many cases in my DO working half of our contracted hours. How much money does that actually cost the company if this is replicated nationwide ? Why don't the 2 parties who are involved in the talks realise that every day without resolution is a day closer to the abyss ? I for one would be astounded if the actual wage bill for the company today compared to actual work performed didn't amount to a loss of more than the £1 million which is what the company likes to bandy about. It's a ridiculous state of affairs and just typifies the shambolic nature of the Company presently. No leadership, no short/long term plan and an antiquated structure which is leaking money day after day after day.

In our office today, so much got left in yet some people messaged me around 12 (finish time is 2) saying they'd done, but won't be taking anymore as it isn't their job. That is exactly what our job is

I took half an hour of delivery from a failed duty and still finished at half 11. Cannot for the life of me imagine any other business who would pay me for 3 hours of sitting at home doing diddly squat. Someone has got to get a grip and do something about it before it's too late.

I'm wondering that'll happen mid September when the ballot reaches its 6 month minimum, will RM agree to it being extended by another 3 months? What will happen once the ballot has expired?

we got finished 15mins early today, we filled up our time by taking more d2d's than normal hence later on in the week can ease overtime and less pressure on us,RICARD020191962 wrote:Does anyone else who values their job and actually is proud to work for Royal Mail wonder just how inept senior management is to allow this farcical Monday situation to continue. the feck up at senior level can be managed on the shop floor but line management are too inept at instructing people who are hell bent on finishing early and park up for a while or can go straight home
some were leaving 60-90 mins before us today and we coasted it taking well over 25% households

I suppose you could look at it like this: is it actually losing money if we arent all working our full hours on a Monday, as is happening currently? Its not costing them anymore outgoings for us to be all finishing an hour or two early compared to if we all finished bang on time. Which is probably a silly way to view it.
But ive always had an issue with our DOM going on and on about early finishes when actually when you look at it properly and factor in breaks that are being used end of shift, its probably no more than 30-60 minutes being made on certain days by certain people. And then when you consider that a good few of them came in early, and 90% arent using trolleys . . it sort of shows where a lot of that time is being made.
I dont think the answer is to just randomly send us back out with packets that might be left etc, surely the fair way is to do things officially with revisions based on the PDA actuals and then if people are still making time, it just has to be accepted that some are quicker than others. Just as it should be accepted that some are slower and might need to cut off.
Its so different to most other jobs in terms of we have a certain amount of work coming in each day, and it will vary hugely from day to day. Its not like we can wind the clock down and leave work till the next day. Thats why there is such a culture of get it done as quickly as possible.
Im sure if they brought in delivery standards, most of us would surely be found to be working at a pace faster than what those standards would be.
I dont know where im going with this really, and im sure there will be lots of you disagreeing with some of my points! Just some random thoughts really. All i know is that yes i might on average gain maybe and hour or possibly 2 each week, but the effort i put into it, and what it takes oit of me, physically and mentally- I seriously do not think i should be doing anymore than what i am!

I value every opinion that is muted. We are all individuals who see things in our own way. Would never denigrate anyone's take on the job, it's not an easy fix but we just seem to be bereft of any direction. Loads in my office just please themselves and I include myself in this. Start early, take no break, wear your own footwear and get finished as quickly as you possibly can. It just feels that this kind of anarchy can't continue indefinitely. We need some kind of different structure to ensure the long term future of the Company.

i don't particularly know the management stance on "cleared duties" but ours like to chip away at trying to get mail out on certain uncovered dutiesmjd24 wrote:I suppose you could look at it like this: is it actually losing money if we arent all working our full hours on a Monday, as is happening currently? but why let say 50 duties complete an hour or so early which they can then brown nose to those above that they're not too bad considering and that only 10 duties failed but omit to say they still have 3 days pkts & 2 days mail and those staff are knackered and on the verge of going off sick!
why not say on a monday to those who will have a flyer "leave that loop in and take that off another"
i had a street today with 60 houses....4 letters, no pkts! if i had my own van i would have willingly helped someone with double mail,
the lack of teamwork with posties mirrors the lack of leadership & transport/tools to do the job

Not really. This is what Tuesday used to be like. And going back even further every day was this easy. The quote of losing 1m a day is just to keep us all downtrodden.

Not finished before 2.15 for at least the last 5 Mondays now (on different duties)
Letters on a Monday are still down but not as low as the first few weeks of lockdown and parcels are still at more or less Xmas levels.
I'm amazed that people are finishing 2 hours or more early, they must have had some very cushy duties/offices even before this CV disruption came along.

I’ve been doing the job 2 years and yesterday was the first time I’ve finished more than a few minutes early (I finished 45 minutes early).
Checked the sign in sheet and some were going home 2, even 3 hours early. Management had all gone home too.
I just don’t get why managers don’t stay behind and have us, me included, prepping D2Ds. It seems mad we have vans full of crap, trays and yorks dumped in the yard, D2Ds not prepped, pouches with food wrappers and torn up P739s in them yet most of us could tootle off home. We should be sorting all that, tidying up etc.
And before anyone asks why I didn’t stop and do that and lead by example - I’m PT and the DOM often checks what time I get back then deducts that from my OT. So it’s no good me getting back at 2.15 and prepping D2Ds until 3pm if I then have 45 minutes removed.

The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

The ballot has as good as expired.
We would need to give 14 days notice which would take us into September but the truth is the ballot expired before the result was even announced because by then we were already in a pandemic. It was nothing more than a token gesture, a rather weak bargaining position.
I doubt the business position will change much after September, they already know what they need, the union knows it has little option but to accept those changes and what they're really discussing right now is a way to implement those changes and still keep the staff on board while allowing the union to at least look as if it has some influence.
It's a PR exercise now but then that's really all it ever is.
