If a full time walk becomes available in the office, how does seniority work? If a part time employee has 30 years seniority, do they get preference over a full time with 10 years seniority? Cheers

you shouldnt have two seperate lists anymore, outdoor time of dutys is the same we did away with ft/pt over 10 years ago.they were different years ago when a f/t was doing 2nd delivery and returned to office p/t didnt.should just be one big pick.

So if a new job goes up in his office who gets it?

the 30 year PT postie who now wants FT
OR
the 10 year FT postie who wants to change his duty

assuming they are the only two. my guess would be the 30 year one gets then his duty goes up.... after all the FT is already FT..... so that wouldnt then become vacanr.

I’d assume the more senior postie would get it, the added bonus to the DOM is that he can replace a f/t duty with a part timer and replace the p/t with another new part timer. The down side to the office is that the indoor part of the full time duty is now absorbed by the remaining full timers

Only full timers can sign for them in our office.

Seniority is King as far as resigns are concerned. Postie working longest in the DO gets first choice whether they are full or part time. I don't necessarily think it's the best or the fairest system but it's what we have.

Appreciate all the replies. We have been told by DOM that it goes to full time staff first, even if they have less seniority. If this is wrong, What course of action needs to be taken? Thanks

Why don't you think it's fairest/best? I think it is, otherwise what are you rating it on? Performance? Personality? Likes?

What about with cases of "pay protection" where someone who's been receiving an allowance gets bumped off a duty which attracts that allowance?

I was part of a repick years ago and the office had about 6 duties with high top vans that attracted the extra payment if about £26 a week. Those duties where ring fenced in a sort of mini repick for the current people doing them, if they wanted to pick a duty without the allowance they could and lost the allowance and that spare duty could then be picked by anyone. They dient want to force people off duties otherwise I believe they got the payment for 3 years and the new duty holder would get it as well. So paying it to 2 people instead of 1 for the 3 years. Don't know if it's still the same now though

Hard to say what would be a better system. I know using the seniority to arrange annual leave upsets some people. Sort of the same thing with the capitalist system in that it's not a particularly good system and incredibly wasteful but what do you replace it with.

A lottery would be fairer than seniority so far as walk allocation goes (especially if people were rotated around walks every 5-7 months or so - gosh! now watch people squeal at the very notion! - but you can bet walks would suddenly become a lot fairer as senior staff would then have an interest in ensuring better balance).

Alternatively, people could just be assigned to walks and lump it (which is basically what happens with jobs in every other industry). Seniority doesn't bother me much personally but I can see why so many people joining regard it as baffling and antiquated.

As an aside, using seniority to determine annual leave should upset people - doing that is illegal.
