Leaving RM to go back to my old company

afternoon all

a few thoughts on my part and any responses appreciated, i left my old company where i was a transmitter specialist climbing transmitters and fitting point to point wireless rural internet because i wanted to get off the climbing game and on to terra firma and joined royal mail 5 months ago, i like the job apart from van sharing and the ammount of door to doors :), but this whole union strike thing and Rico Back thing has got me thinking, is he really as bad as his apparent reputation, could there be 0 hour contracts and massive job losses, RM as we know it torn to shreds, im a part timer on 25 hours, at the beginning i was hoping at some point to be made up to full time but i read thats unlikely for the future, anyway my old company called me this weekend and asked if id have a chat with them about returning, less of the climbing and more of a technical role back on my original salary which is nearly double what im getting here, basically what im asking is what does everyone think the future of RM looks like with Rico, the union, striking etc, im extremely tempted to go back.

Certainly changes will be happening with Royal Mail in the future, I think you would be foolish to turn down the offer of your job back.

Remember You left Your old job for a reason.I don’t know many who left Royal Mail to return to old jobs who didn’t regret it.

he said he left because of the climbing which now wont be as much a part of the job if he returns.

That’s what they say now.Why didn’t they tell Him this before He resigned? He wouldn’t have left then.Everyone has their own agenda.Was it the only reason He left?I would guess probably not .Its always for the good of the firm .

i welcome all comments and i appreciate it as its a lot to think about, the climbing side they now have another engineer doing so my role would be the technical side setting up and sorting everything for these transmitters and customers, the money is a lot better and no weekend work at all, my concerns about RM being a part timer is were going to be the ones that suffer first at the hands of Rico Back at the moment its OK im doing 30 to 35 hours a week however in the future when and if things reduce ill be back down to 25 in no time and my old company who i did really like working for have given me this opportunity, maybe i should take it, i cant see any negatives with taking it but i can see positives, theres alot of angry posties at the depot right now about the strike action and the future most think there is no future under RIco its hard not to listen lol

Don't take this the wrong way, but I can't understand for the life of me why you left what seems like a skilled, interesting, well paid career where I imagine you had a lot of autonomy and independence in your typical working day, with room for progression or other roles within that industry.... to come and do this s**t!

I agree van share and d2d's are the two worst aspects of the job, luckily I don't do van share and usually only get 3 lots of d2d's at the most, but if either of those situations changed considerably I'd jack this job in.

If you've got doubts now after 5 months of light summer mail volumes and pleasant summer weather then you're going to hate the job after the next 5 months of ''autumn pressure'' then ''Christmas pressure'' and the grim winter weather.

Why are door to doors seen as such an issue?

I don't mind if there are 0-1 or 7-8. Just plan your bags and split them right down/use a trolley etc. Your finish time is still the same.

If it's because they aren't prepped for you coming in when they should be, then that is a totally different argument and means someone isn't doing their job.

It's nothing to do with the extra time they take, I'm quite happy to book it, but I personally just find them really irritating to deal with, an utter pain in the arse.

Thin flimsy ones sticking together or flapping around in the wind and scrunching up instead of easily going through letterboxes, odd shaped ones constantly falling out of your bundles, the reaction from residents when you hand over a wad leaflets to them.

I'm also convinced they're not actually the great earner that RM think they are, given the extra time it takes to deal with them.. I typically book an extra 30 mins a day if I have 3 lots of d2d's to prep and and deliver.

We do earn a decent wage & and have good conditions (thanks to the union).

For a 5 months part-timer, in my opinion you might have a crack of Full time in about 20 years assuming no changes happen & your office is setup like ours. Got to be brutally honest on this one and say changes will happen whether we like it or not. Getting full-time starting earlier is unlikely. One possibly way of increasing your contract would be doing your delivery as u currently do and then delivering parcels maybe two or three afternoon / evenings per week when the potential changes happen.

If I was the ceo I would probably do something similar to rico regarding oversize parcels. I do have a heart and wouldnt change wages & conditions. Guy up top needs to justify his wage & bonus so automation & eventually hitting our hard fought wages/condition is what hes after.

If you like this job and your old job you have to decide which one you want to do. RM will probably be p/t hours working f/t hours & weekends. In your old job you'd need to specify that you dont want to climb in your contract.

If you can get out of RM I would recommend doing so. I would like to think we will get somewhere with industrial action and if we really hit them hard we may get somewhere. The share price has risen when it was expected to fall a bit more. This suggests to me we are going to get a kicking.

You've done 5 months? I'd be tempted to complete the 6 months first. The thing about this job is you can always come back, and on the same money.
