Not Allowed To Perform New Duty

Hi everyone.

So I have got my own walk after being a spare which I started at the beginning of last week. Now since starting this duty I have been put on 3 other walks (which I had not done before) and been asked to go to another office, which I refused to do due to manager wanting me to drive my own car.

Now I understand the needs of the office coming first but where do I stand as I am very unhappy I have my own duty at last but in under 2 weeks I have been moved 3 times already and there are whispers that I will be sent to another office tomorrow. No other dutyholders are being asked to do other duties either, just me. Thank you

No, my van share partner does both our walks as a double shift when this occurs.

Welcome to RMC PostmanStan. As with nearly every problem you have with your Daily Work, the first port of call is always the Unit CWU Rep. Do you have one? Do you feel he is doing the job, or interested in your problem? If he is see what he can do by talking to the DOM. Phase 2 (if you have no joy with the Rep, some are bloody useless), phone the Local CWU Office and ask to speak to the Area Delivery Rep. They're normally more experienced and I've found them to be very useful in the past.

He may well advice you to put in a Grievance Form against your DOM. You appear to be a Newbie so the Management are going to try and take the piss, and see what they can get away with. Well done for discovering this site.

You'll find all the information you need to work in this company on here. Firstly try searching for your "Subject" on the Blue Shirts Forum, before posting a question as most problems are Recurring far to often in this Business. Things such as The Over Running Procedure (often referred to as "Cutting Off"), Not being paid Over Time, Not getting your Annual leave.... they've already been asked many times, so the answer may be there.

Your DOM will get away with whatever YOU let him get away with. You don't have to be a Stroppy Bastard just point out that you were employed to do X Duty and you'd like to get on with it. As a Newbie you'll need a certain ammount of time to learn the job. This isn't helped if you're pushed around different Duties, indeed different Delivery Offices (DOs).

Your DOM will probably play the "Operational Requirements" card, which is fine but not an excuse for Bad Management, or Discrimination. Point out that you'll be happy to help out by working in other DOs, provided this work is shared out amongst the other Posties in the DO. You'll find certain individuals NEVER cover another Duty, let alone actually stray outside the area of their own little kingdom!

If he insists on moving you around different DOs there's a whole different set of tactics to use. 1) Start & Finish time is at Your own DO..... 2) You ask for transport to be provided to the other DO (DO NOT USE YOUR OWN CAR).......... 3) Make sure your "New" DOM is aware that you need to be returned to your own DO by your contracted finish time. Those are the basics. Bear in mind that whatever you do in your job Do Not Work for Free. Good Luck

Same in my office, virtually everyone is treated as a leave reserve and moved around at will regardless of whether they're a duty holder.

The only ones who seem to get away with never being messed around are the longest servers who've been on the same (unaltered) duty for the last 30 years and don't know any other rounds.

Why doesn't your "colleague" go and perform his/her overtime in the other office instead of screwing you over.
S/he is the one who isn't allowing you to perform your duty.

Have you signed for this walk?

It sounds like youve just been placed on a vacant walk by the manager which means they have carte blanche to move you due to 'operational requirements'.

If you have signed for the duty then different story

Totally agree with CCR on this one but is it me that's a bit unfit as I'm fukt after work anyway, I couldn't physically do both walks on our van share, it takes 4.5 hrs as it is never mind 9hrs to do them both !
