Protection from DOG ATTACKS?

Can anyone suggest how to protect oneself from stray cross breeds that follow, then approach and get provocative, when I am trying to deliver the mail - on foot in a built up type of property area?

I have tried backing away slowly, and returned to the DO with some undelivered mail, but this really does seem like a NO win situation. These roaming dogs seem to set up their "territory" and any one who ventures nearby becomes their pray!!!

My office have sent out dog warning letter, but resident seems to be ignoring it.

Ideas for SELF DEFENCE please???

not your job to be fighting off dogs, simply move onto next available safe delivery point, return mail and endorse it 'loose dog' with unable to deliver sticker. After a period of time the owner or his neighbours will resolve the issue themselves as they will get fed up with delayed mail. The neighbours will most likely sort this out as they will prob be stalked by the dog themselves and peer pressure will force the chav to resolve.

I always though DOs had them available for problem walks.

However, ff you don't mind forking out under Â£30 http://www.primrose-london.co.uk/portab ... -1271.html you might be able to claim it back from Royal Mail.

You should get your Dim to issue one of the sonic things, they are supposed to work but in my experience don't, we have been issued with spray, seems to work on the dogs i have tested it on, don't know if it's the contents of the spray our the shock of it coming out at them rather quickly, got that off my Dum

been bitten a couple of times, it really is no fun, whatever you do will be wrong as your Dum will question your actions on return and say "why didn't you do that?" hindsight is great isn't it? they haven't a great big dog in front of them and lots of time to think, i usually get to the "oh fu**" and then just react

Perhaps the residents haven't ignored it, they've not had it delivered because of the dogs !

The thing is "normal" dogs usually act in a predictable way - so can be avoided and are not a problem. However, the "half breeds" can have an element of MADNESS in them which makes them UNpredictable - eg:- one such dog that was chasing me up and down an avenue was leaping SIDEWAYS in a crab like fashion! Utter madness.

Any more AVOIDANCE techniques welcome. Keep the ideas coming good buddies!

I've been bitten a few times over the years, amazing how fast RM and the Union turn there backs on you.

Anyway, try to find the phone number of the local council dog catcher if the dog roams loose in the street also carry a few dog biscuits to keep it busy while you escape AND inform the Police...............

I was attacked by a dog on Saturday but give it a good whack with my cycle helment before it could bite me.

I've always rung the depot and been told to skip the area where the dog is and go back later on if possible

I just bring it back and write DOG AT LARGE on every letter with the date so that everyone knows why they aren't getting their post.

A dog not on a lead is against the law, it is therefore a Police issue and they should be contacted immediately.

The following are all likely to have been breached, Dogs Act, The Road Traffic Act, Dangerous Dogs Act, The Control of Dogs Order and The Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act.

could use those acts against some of the human residents where I live -seriously it's no joke , you feel for that poor fella in Sheffield with that attack by that japanese fighting dog breed -Tosa ? and something else cross . Poor b*stard is going to be a bag of nerves on tablets , PTSD , he's already having flashbacks .

If RM and the CWU want to turn their backs on people ,there's plenty of no win , no fee type solictors touting for work .

No doubt, but the police are rarely interested in anything that's against the law unless it's a lot less serious than a dangerous dog.

I got bit on the arm by a rhodesian ridgeback about a month ago - it was going for my face but I put my arm up out of instinct. It didn't draw blood ( I had my shirt, fleece and jacket on) but I got some sort of crush injury to my tricep and the muscle went hard for about a fortnight.

The owner got all apologetic and gave it the " he's never done that before" routine. The guy who was cleaning next door's windows saw it all and came over telling me and the owner that we were lucky it didn't my face as my nose would be on the floor...

Got back to the office and the OM couldn't care less. Asked to put in the accident book and he just shrugged and said "come and see me tomorrow or something and I'll log it".

He never did.
