Snow Days

Can someone point us in the direction of the agreement covering snow days. Can see the usual scenario being played out this week as snow is being forecast where the management have us all standing around for 4 hours in our freezing cold unit while they try to decide what to do. No doubt they’ll try the old “we’ll let you go at 11 on the proviso that you agree to pay back the hours tomorrow and stay out till 4pm and all the Mail is cleared. Surely they can ask people to show goodwill but not force it if delivery the previous day has been postponed?

Ha ha ha ! ha ha ha ha !

Royal Mail Goodwill.

Thats a good joke, something I've not seen since the 90s :Boo hoo!

You can stay in the office as a few lads did when we offered the option of leaving early and owe the hours or stay in, we saw through the scam as you can't bank hours, we told them to stuff it and stayed in the office til end of shift.

My advice to you is the same.

If they choose to send you home that is their decision. You don't/will owe them anything. They sometimes say you can go out on delivery but if you go A over T then it's your own fault. Last year they asked us to go out with just the packets and then go home.

I know in 1987 we went out when we had a deluge of snow. Took the bus out and slid around for a few hours on delivery! Happy days...

What usually happens is that once the indoor work is completed, the managers ask if anyone wants to take a half day's holiday. Then about an hour or two later they send everyone who remains home.

If you're sent home you owe nothing. It's sensible to hang on until that point.

It’s not through choice - you have to wait till management tell you to go which as I said in previous years it can be 3/4/5 hours after your start time. Remember some people can’t work later the next day if they have child care issues

Showing my age now, but in the winter of 1980 we had rear wheel drive Marina vans, and to get more grip in the snow my pal and I put a large piece of stone in the back, must have easily weighed 8 stone ( or more ). We got everywhere ( my buddy was with me, it was allowed in those days ).
