Allocation of 5th and 6th weeks annual leave.

Can anyone confirm if these goes by seniority or first come first serve. By FCFS, I mean why should people have to wait for others more senior to take weeks to choose what they want as their 5th week, when others already know what they want.

Annual leave must not be allocated according to seniority. It's unlawful to do so.

However it's also true that no established 'formula' exists in law. A company just needs to try to be fair. First come, first served, holiday allocated on a rota, holiday allocated to chosen weeks prioritised by lot, 'rotating picks', etc. All could be used.

Well, we have been told that the extra weeks/hours that you get at 15/20 years are now to be allocated in this way.
Interested to find out how other offices do it?

PS, the other 4 weeks that everyone gets are on a rota.

Well if you don't agree with it, point out it's unlawful and go from there. With seniority involved, your union rep may be reluctant to support a grievance (though they should), but it will simply be an administrative convenience for whoever sorts the rota and they're probably just ignorant of the fact they shouldn't.

I don’t see what’s wrong with seniority. Worked well for long enough and everyone accepted it.

I agree seniority isn't a good system but it's what we stuck with. Like Capitalism......,
