So many questions

Post by HTPostman »

And no one to turn to other than my fellow helpful posties here! Recently returned to Royal Mail, it's as chaotic as it's always been but I expected that.

Can anyone help answer these questions, as I don't trust what the Linos and DOM say.

1. I'm on a 25hr part time contract. Should I be given a fixed rolling day off, eg Monday one week, Tuesday the next, Wednesday the week after? Or am I resigned to looking at the rota each week and seeing mostly Tuesdays off and never having a Saturday off again?

2. Re said Rota, when I clocked out of the depot at 1.30pm on Saturday 27th October it still wasn't up for the upcoming week (w/c 29th October). What's the rule if I go in tomorrow and it turns out to be my day off? Can I request to be given some work on OT?

3. Van test. I did a Royal Mail van test back in circa 2009. 3 linos say it still counts and I don't need to do it again so I was sent out in a van earlier this week. Looking back I shouldn't have done that, as they could have told me anything just to get packets delivered. Anyone know if an 8yr break in service means I need to take it again?

4. Annual leave. Was given a form for 2019-2020 to fill in which is all fine and dandy, but I asked about my entitlement for the remainder of 2018-2019 which I can tell they weren't expecting to be asked. A helpful Lino said I'm owed 2 weeks. The DOM is the only one authorised to do annual leave. I've asked on 5 occasions if he can book me any 2 weeks off, so I get can get holidays booked. Each time I've had a different excuse. Been told by helpful Lino December and February is fully booked. That leaves just 3 seperate months to take the leave. I have a feeling I'll be fobbed off till the 2019-2020 period when those 2 weeks will 'roll over' (ie they won't). What's the process here? Still on probation so don't want to be getting in the bad books by getting the union rep involved but I'm not working for the next 5+ months without a holiday I'm legally entitled to.

Thanks in advance :-)

1. If you are a reserve then you aren't entitled to a rolling day off.
2. Approach the manager and explain the situation and if no joy approach the rep and explain that you need the rota displayed in advance.
3. ?. I have never heard of anyone having to redo the changeover but I don't know.
4. Ask the manager if you can see what weeks are available, If no joy approach the rep.
You should only be able to carry 5 days over by mutual consent.

I understand that being on probation you might not want to rock the boat but sometimes it is the only way.
Using the rep doesn't have to be confrontational. He is simply representing your concerns. It is what you pay your subs for.
And if you don't rock the boat now you may well find that by the time you have the confidence to do it, the thing will have capsized and rocking it will have no effect.

That is subject to what this particular individual’s contract states. Otherwise we are creating a two tier workforce, we probably have one anyway but that is by accident rather than design and hopefully the union are opposed to it.

1. As a reserve there is no entitlement to have a rolling day off but you can request to be treated equally if you want some Saturdays off they can give you the equivalent of one off every 6 weeks if that’s what everyone else gets but not every 6 weeks.

2. Unless they have told you it’s your day off they should find you work (but I’m not sure what rules there are to confirm this)

3. It’s not a driving test only a risk assessment so there is no reason for you to need to take another one.

4. If you have just started you should have told them that you had pre booked holiday which they would have had to honour. But now it seems too late for that so you need to take it where there is space, only 5 days can be carried over.

Of course a reserve is entitled to a rolling day off, unless their contract states otherwise . If not then why are the union not kicking up a huge fuss about a two tier workforce, we probably already have one as it happens, but they should wake up and realise what's happening.

What about people who have a fixed day off?

What about offices where some are on 1 in 4, some are on 9 day fortnights and some on a fixed Mon-Fri?
3 tier workforce?

As is maybe so, but the original quote I used to make my point was in answer to the correspondent who asked specifically about a rolling day off.

I doubt there is anything in the contract about a rolling day off.
Otherwise all the people I mentioned would have different contracts of employment.
As far as I am aware they don't.
Or you could choose a Mon - Fri duty and then insist on a rotational day off because it is in your contract?
