64 Box Frames - Have They Been Any Good?

Now that every office (MC and DO) should have had the 64 box flat and letters frames, how are they working out? I think they slow things down as we seem to spend a fair bit more time clearing down now.

The ones with the bungee cords at the back.

The cords are now breaking through overuse and small letters are invariably missing the cords and go sailing out the back of the frame.

You are meant to clear from the back, but no one does because there is no ledge to help clear into a box, so you either do it one handed, kick the box down the frame as you load it, or perform a work out by attempting to touch your toes as you empty each point. Much easier to use the front.

Slower, less efficient, less secure and prone to cause muscular problems, all in all, no doubt an outstanding success.

You are meant to clear from the back.

The porter is supposed to clear from the back.
And s/he has a little trolley thing to push as s/he clears down.

Some years ago they installed the backless frames in a DO near mine.
The Area Manager thought they were so useless that no more were installed anywhere under his remit.

They're rubbish. A decent enough idea but the usual shoddy implementation. And the actual boxes could do with being about an inch bigger in every dimension.

The porter idea has been abandoned here because.

1. It meant 1 less on IPS/Prepping.
2. The preppers were not getting "fed" fast enough.
3. Part Timers were wasting time waiting for the porter to bring their boxes even to them though they were not due to be in.
4. The porters suffered back problems because of the height of the trolley. There may be some perfect porters out there but as a general use item, it was not well designed ergonomically.
5. The number of duties and size of the office meant a lot of extra walking and required the task be fairly distributed. It wasn't as managers were afraid to tell the "louder" posties to do their bit when they knew that they would "kick off".

At the risk of repeating myself - both portering and backless frames were a good idea if everything worked perfectly. But nothing does in real life does, and that's why these pie in the sky ideas generally fall flat on their face.

When will RM finally get that getting a letter from A to B for the last few hundred years has changed very little from the POSTIE end and in all that time, the POSTIE has found the quickest way to do it. It's these university types that they bring in every year now that are given projects to justify their employment. They have mostly never ever had another job and never delivered or even seen a DO and their let loose to think up the next head f..k. Get rid of them, most linos and that would be a start.

Replace the linos with posties who know their office. Ok they might still be crap as a lino but at least they'd have an understanding on how the office works

As well as taking longer to sort the mail (due to the increased amount of times that boxes need clearing out) it seems like it also now needs more staff, probably mainly due to the time lost from the boxes having to be cleared down more often
