I only wear the official polo/shirt - wear my own shorts (plain black) with no complaints.

Yes you can be sent home if found out what would happen if you were involved in an incident and said manager turned up with you in your birthday suit!

Ages ago RM were talking about yet another complete change of uniform design and colour but we haven't heard anymore for a while. I think our DOM said recently that it is going to happen in the near future.

Dress standards

Our dress standards have been jointly agreed with CWU. Uniform is not only a key part of supporting Health and Safety standards, but also represents the image of Royal Mail to our customers. Examples of the standards are:

• Always wear your uniform on duty if you work in a customer-facing role.

• Apart from travelling to and from work, you shouldn’t wear your uniform off duty.

• Your uniform should always be clean and in good condition.

• Ensure jewellery is not a potential safety hazard. Don’t wear dangling items that could be trapped in machinery or equipment.

• You must return all items of uniform when replacements are issued or you leave Royal
Mail.

If they want this then they should replace things when needed, not you get 2 pairs of trousers every 2 years which NEVER last anything like that long. Mine fall to pieces long before the 2 years; currently I'm wearing Aldi 'workwear' trousers, they're very good and much harder wearing than the Royal Mail ones. Cost about 8 quid.

So why is it a fight to get a new pair of footwear after the soles wear out if you have exceeded your allocation...

Because like everything in RM world, on the one hand there are people who dream up policies that look and sound very good and on the other hand there are bean counters who do everything they possibly can to undermine those very same policies.
What the general public don't know is that being a modern day postman is akin to being trapped in a nightmarish Kafkaesque world where doing what you think is the correct thing will more than probably involve you in a conduct case.
