The duty is put up on the noticeboard with a time limit for anyone to register their interest in signing for it. The person signing with the highest seniority will have the duty assigned to them. If no one wants to sign for it then generally the last postie to start working at that DO will be 'given' it to do.

Offered the duty or it gets advertised .
