Transfer change of heart

Lad at my office is due to transfer on Monday but now doesn't want to go. He told his Dom this earlier in the week but was told he had to go. Anyone know if he has to go?

Has there been a replacement fixed for the office he is vacating?

Having informed his line manager earlier in the week of his change of heart the lad should have brought his union rep into the meeting to find out what the current situation is with his duty whether signed, floater, reserve or P/T.
The union rep at the resourcing meeting or the duty roster for next week would show what action has been taken by him transferring and it could prove difficult because of the lateness in having second thoughts but it is all dependant on what action his office has taken on him transferring and the union rep would be aware of this.
If the lad has a contact number for rep he should make a phone call soonest.

We had someone change their mind about transferring into our office last year. I don't think it was last minute but it was pretty close to the line so you should have chance of changing your mind. Most DOs are short staffed and DOMs try to hold on to the staff they have and are fairly resistant against posties transferring out. Knowledge of full time positions in other nearby DOs is not always passed on to staff in other offices.

Union Rep was informed but was told it was too late apparently. What would be the next steps to getting a transfer back?

Before considering a transfer back as I don't know what this lads actual duty is can it firstly be established from the union rep if the lads duty has been replaced on an O/T basis, being covered by a reserve until advertised then we proceed from there.
If the manager has not made any arrangements as yet in filling his duty then the office has not been inconvenienced although the lad has left this to the last minute and the status quo would remain.
There may be other factors why manager is digging his/ her heels in to the transfer remaining personality difference, absence history, disciplinaries etc. but again the union rep would be on the case instead of putting it down to the lateness of the tranfer withdrawl given by the manager.
I can't see any way out at the momement of him not having to report for duty on the Monday at his new office and inform his Dom that he erred in his transfer request and he now wishes to remain at his original office and MAYBE both mangers can come to an agreement to assist the lad and he may have a justified reason for wishing to remain where he is.

Furthermore his new manager does not have to overspend in having the lad trained on a new route.

Would it be worth mentioning it to the new Dom and be honest or get the union to sort it?

That's what I have mentioned in my posting and possibly a telephone call between his new DOM and previous DOM the two of them can sort the problem.
If the lad has a justified personal reason for wishing to remain where he is which was not evident at the time of applying for the transfer then this needs to be mentioned.
May wish to bring area/divisional union rep into the situation.

Maybe he should just give it a go at this new office? I understand that it is easy to get settled in and that change is daunting, but it is worth at least giving it a try. I am due to move offices soon, I was umming ang ahhing to begin with, but now I am ready for it....new office will be closer and save me lots of money and time. I assume that this guy is moving to a closer office, so he will be better off in the long term.
