Too many managers?
Why is it always posties bare the brunt of cuts? Managers do very little. Saturday - away home early - nothing to do. Isn't it obvious there are too many managers.

Yes too many managers with little or no idea of how to manage should things get a bit choppy and a dicision need to be made,I hate to criticise but speak as you find,we rarely see ours,he has two to manage, some say that's good, but ideally need a boss to be available to deal with issues and not at the end of a phone to get someone else to fix it

They feel there isn't enough managers which is why they are looking to recruit 800 more . Better order more coffee machines .

we don't have any managers, we have overpaid people who wear a tie, they don't or can't manage,
mine isn't that bad to talk to but the voices above dictate how we are treated

Too many managers?
So true, cant believe they are looking to recruit more managers. They go home early, often dont work saturdays. Its always the poor postie that has to suffer.Typical RM coming up with another crazy idea. The managers they have got should learn to treat their posties with more respect, talk to them better and stop the bullying. If you have a happy workforce, you have a productive workforce,I dont expect RM have ever thought of that!zz666 wrote:Why is it always posties bare the brunt of cuts? Managers do very little. It's not that there are too many managers but there is not enough work to justify a full-time role. The way the job is structured especially in delivery the vast amount of their work is done by the time we've left the office, as the indoor work has declined so has this content. The only sensible solution for the business is to downgrade the line manager role to "team leader" and tag a delivery role onto the end. Since most of the actual DOM responsibility and role can now be done using a laptop there is also an argument for reducing the number of DOMs and having them oversee 3 or 4 offices. There's big savings to be made but as always the issue is getting rid of existing dead wood efficiently.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

In fairness there is a fair amount managers could be doing.
Updating A+
Updating frames
Assessing walk lengths and duration (in a real way)
Adjusting Flex Plans to be more coherent and better organised
are just some examples.
Instead they stare at onscreen 'tick box' sheets and attend futile meetings. Partly this is because higher RM manaegment are control freaks, partly because most RM line manager and DOMs are fairly lazy.
That said, when I joined our office had 3-5 managers in daily. Now it is 8-9. Given staff have been reduced fairly dramatically and mail volumes fallen, that is symptomatic of an organisation utterly incoherent in structure.

You see this in many, many organizations but there's a real tendency in Royal Mail for empire building. This really wouldn't be a problem - that much - if we were still run by the government but is now. Having a bloated middle-management structure really isn't the path to success in the free market.fishtank wrote:It's not that there are too many managers but there is not enough work to justify a full-time role. Too many managers?
I love the way they are recruiting managers. None seem to have ever worked in management let alone any role within RM. Bored housewives and disgruntled 50 year olds seem to be all the rage now and all seem to lack any knowledge whatsoever of the business or indeed what they themselves are actually supposed to be doing?
But of course the race to the bottom is all down to the grunts on the ground right?

Union what Union? Do we have a union?

It would be interesting to find out for each level of management what % of them have worked their way up through the ranks (starting as a normal OPG). I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have to go up the tiers much before the % hit 0%

RM want rid of all those older line managers and they are recruiting new, younger managers on less money that they can more readily adapt to taking out deliveries and doing postal work, as and when. Managers could update the duty frames and assess walk lengths but they tend to be too imbued with day to day stuff like ensuring that mail and packets are getting sorted with an ever decreasing rate of walk-sorters and getting lapsed duties covered, knowing full well that they will be delivering half of it themselves.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

6 months in the job as a part timer on 24 hours asked to go full time as a manager and is duly given the job titled Manager with no expierence only being told what to do by the DOM and there goes the problem translation from DOM to novice to postie - what a farce what a poor excuse to run a business and the ones to suffer are us posties.

Too many managers?
I was an early morning shift manager for DHL for 25 years worked my way up from parcel courier to supervisor then manager but I was THE MANAGER from 5am until 10am no other manager needed then another manager in 10 till 6 so manager on branch all day was well organised and all knew what they had to do I was trained in health and safety , first aid , and transport was very much hands on when needed to be which earns respect not just standing around arms folded watching others work When I now see my Royal M ail DO medium size with sometimes 4to 5 manages in at one time it does make me smile as they would not last 5 mins in any other delivery company .
Before you ask I took EVR as the other cowboy outfit Yodel purchased the DHL domestic parcels business only part time now as that does me
