Best thing about being a Postie?

I'm currently trying to go through the recruitment process with RM and reading a lot on the forum. Definitely sensing how tough conditions can be.

As someone who is looking to join the business. What are some of the positive things you like about the role or the company?

I've checked some older topics but struggling to find anything recent so apologies if this topic is a bit recycled.

Sometimes the weathers right, the quantity of mail is low etc. and I find myself enjoying the job tremendously. Pretty rare for this to happen though. Usually there is enough mail / parcels to ensure you have to go round full throttle all the time, making it stressful.

As a reserve shipped between offices, I've also enjoyed exploring new areas and seeing the different types of housing and meeting the people who live in them.

Its also nice to be part of a visible workforce, tooting royal mail vans as you drive by in yours... randomly acosting postmen on your day off and telling them that you might take a bundle off them. hehehe.

I think you must be in a VERY small minority who find this to be a good thing about the job!
As you've rightly said, most of the time you have to go at ''full throttle'' constantly, even on duties and areas you're familiar with and you don't have time to take in your surroundings... this applies even more when you're a reserve delivering to areas you've never been to before

I won't lie. Going on a different walk in a different office every day of the week is HARD but I have enjoyed seeing different parts of town. Also now I find it a bit boring if I am on the same walk for long stretches. It would be ideal for me to rotate between walks, but do each for two or three weeks at a time.

A good thing for me is the office banter...just be a bit careful how far you go!
The real best thing is that wonderful feeling you get when arriving home from your last day before a rest week

Best things about being a postie:

Working outside instead of in a stuffy office.
You mainly rely on yourself when working.
You can rely on most of your co-workers in a pinch.
Well respected amongst the community you work in.
Decent pay (at the moment).
Keeps you fit.
Once delivering its not that stressful.
Community Spirit.
The Camaraderie.

Don,t bother get a job somewhere else.

No one lives or dies by your actions
No personal safety issues (over and above any other person in the street)
No periodic testing for continuing ability
No responsibility to RM after knocking-off time.
No personal targets to be met, affecting pay etc
Along with recognised union representation, HR, paid sick, paid leave, laid down codes of conduct, appeals processes.
Yep, what an awful job....

Years ago the best thing about being a postie was the early finish and the overtime

Now the best thing about being a postie is being outside the office and going home!

Having sunday off,alot more negatives than positives in this job now 10 year ago nice job.
