Is the benefit still paid out if the death is a suicide?

Straight up answer, as with any death payout be in death in service or insurance... no it would pay nothing.

Just remember it is always darkest before the dawn and many of us have been there. Just remember, it will pass so hang on in there.

In practice the death in service payment is at the discretion of the pension trustees, so to say it’s suicide so they won’t pay out, isn’t necessarily correct.

Some insurers will pay out on suicide, while others won’t. Although there’s often a time limit too. So if someone commits suicide within a certain period of time after taking out the policy, then it might not pay out.

As said, it isn't cut and dried. If the person died with a terminal illness or long-term physical or mental health issues then a pay out would be more than likely, but if they died healthy but in serious debt or under legal investigation then things could be very different.
