Hours of work

Post by Foxglove200 »

Hi There,

My husband has attended an interview today where the interviewer confirmed that the hours of work are 25 per week. He was under the impression that he would be offered more. Is this standard across all depots? Surely this would be classed as part time? Are full time roles ever offered?

Thanks :)

It's more than likely that he'll be doing full time hours despite what his contract says. I've been in the job two years now on a part time contract and haven't once done a part time week. Seems to just be the way of the world nowadays, people get either part time contracts or zero hour contracts, which in no way reflect the actual amount of work being done by the individual

likely he`ll be doing at least 39 hours work and a potential lot of overtime being available if its like most offices. They just offer these contracts so they dont have to pay out so much if theres any quiet weeks ahead where they have a staffing surplus (doesnt tend to happen very often) and also holiday pay is less than a 39 hr FT contract.

Yes afaik only part time hours are offered now. 25 hours being typical!

I expect he will be doing a lot of overtime though!

I agree with Chewster.
I got a reserve job on a 25 hour contract 18 months ago and there is always overtime available. They'll put you on full time walks very often, which means you then get paid a higher rate overtime to cover the extra hours and the D2D (door to door delivery supplement). It's up to you if you want overtime. You might get offered to work on your day off too. If willing, in my office there is a lot of extra work going, more like 35 to 40 hours a week. They are often under-staffed. I can't remember the last time I worked a 25 hour week.

A colleague of mine is already on a three day week job sharing but, being over sixty, is struggling with that.
She is thinking of going onto a zero hours contract but is unsure of what the advantages and disadvantages of that would be and how her pension would be affected.
Any advice from those knowledgeable about such matters would be appreciated.

Incorrect. You get more between 25 and 39, then slightly more then back to basic after 50 or something

Correct. Overtime that takes you up to 39 hours/week includes extra for the Delivery suplement (the idea being that you could work a total of 39 hours and would get a gross amount the same as a full timer). Then, the next 10 hours are paid at one rate, with any remaining hours paid at the normal hourly rate. Not sure what the first 10 hours rate is though......

50p an hour for a full timer above 39 hours for the first 10 hours it used to be the case it was time plus 1.45 or 45% extra so I don't do it anymore these days!
