Thought this was Illegal?
https://www.myroyalmail.com/news/2016/12/win-car" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
To recognise colleagues with 100 per cent attendance, we are offering all frontline colleagues the opportunity to win a brand new car.
There are 11 fantastic cars up for grabs. Each winner will receive a brand new Ford Fiesta five-door hatch 1.5TFCI 75ps style.
All frontline colleagues in Royal Mail operations with no sick or unauthorised absence between Monday 19 December 2016 and Sunday 23 April 2017 will also be included in a draw to win one of the cars.
All frontline colleagues in Parcelforce, International and RMSS with no sick or unauthorised absence between Saturday 24 December 2016 and Sunday 23 April 2017 will be included in a draw to win one of the cars.
There will be three winners in each Royal Mail region (East, North and West), one winner in Logistics and one winner from across International, RMSS and Parcelforce.
Your wellbeing is important to us and if are ill, you may need to take time off to recover. However, given the important role you play every day, we also want to recognise colleagues with 100% attendance.
The scheme is designed to reinforce just how important you are to our success.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Employment Law: Attendance Rewards - Legal Ramifications
If you were thinking of offering your employees special rewards as incentives for having good attendance records, then you must read on. In fact, employers that offer attendance bonuses may find themselves falling foul of the law.
The Royal Mail introduced a rewards scheme for staff that did not to take time off sick. Under the Royal Mail's scheme, workers with full attendance records were entered into a prize draw to win Ford Focus cars or holiday vouchers worth £2,000. As a staff incentive, it seemed to work. The Royal Mail says its overall sickness absence levels fell during a nine-month period (between August and April) by 11%.
However, such schemes could have serious ramifications from a legal viewpoint, and leave employers vulnerable to a variety of legal claims.
Discrimination
1. Employees could bring discrimination claims on the grounds of disability or sex. The success of these claims would depend on each employee's particular circumstances and needs, whether in relation to their family, religion or health.
2. Alternatively, qualifying employees could bring claims for being subjected to detriment treatment as a result of asserting their statutory rights, for example, for:-
Time off for dependants and antenatal care;
Time off for study or training or time off for jury service
Maternity leave;
Adoption leave; or
Paternity or parental leave;
3. Disability discrimination may occur if, for example, an employee had time off connected to a disability and this was not taken into account by the employer under the reward scheme. The employee might claim that the failure of the employer to set aside his/her absence for disability related reasons amounted to less favourable treatment.
How can employers protect themselves from such claims?
Employers can avoid these pitfalls by including a list of exceptions in the reward scheme, for example, jury service or study leave, taking into account any statutory rights to time off; or
Pay bonuses to employees connected to performance in their job rather than implementing an attendance reward.
Employers should be wary of adopting an attendance bonus scheme without legal consultation.

100% attendance over 4 months? What if frontline colleagues had the misfortune to require surgery / outpatient treatment, which requires time off for recovery? Or were sick due to norovirus?

Given as I've never won a single thing in my life this gimmick certainly wont have any influence on my attendance record one way or the other.
If it was a guaranteed reward or bonus I might have been a bit more inclined to pay it some attention.

Another crock of s**t,It's much harder to have 100% attendance in delivery than say a mail centre.

What about those who have accidents on delivery that are not their fault.
Surely this is unfair to them.?????
Vested interest here as I am awaiting surgery in the morning for an accident that was not my fault.
Going to be off work for 6-8 weeks. Prior to this had one day off since 2009.

I remember the last one, I didn't take it seriously because as far as I'm concerned, it's just a gimmick and there is no independent oversight of the scheme, I have no expectation of winning a car because I dont think any names will be "entered", it's more likely a wheze to get more out of you for nothing more than a illusionary prize that doesn't exist.

Not really a prize is it.
If you are ill you are ill, if you are so ill that you can not do your work, you can not do you the work. This is perhaps an incentive for the lazy gits, those who calculate their holiday and sick leave at the beginning of the year..it's all factored in. But what are their chances of winning against those that turn up every day fit or not out of a sense of duty? We have a guy who has worked about six months in two years! I wish I was as fit as he is.
But I have a genuine back issue and had to take two days off this year. Others in the office have the similar problems.. Knees, back, shoulders, hips. The last guy that won one of these incentives never came back to work after his free holliday at two weeks of his choice.
It is what it is, just a gimick.
