I transfered to a delivery office closer to home about 7 months ago, after being in the previous office 6 years or so. About 2 weeks before I was due to start, 1 hour 45 minutes of walk delivery was added to the duty I was to be put on which had previously been a 3pm finish so now it is a 3pm finish with 1 hour 45min overtime everyday. A genuine 4.45 finish not the wink wink away home at 3.30 & claim til 4.45.
Anyway to cut a long story short the part of delivery that was added to me was taken off a very good mate of mine, practically best mate known him for years from school before we ever worked for royal mail. So he comfortably finishes on time everyday with little to none overtime claimed. He regularly goes to his girlfriends house during work hours & just generally pisses about all day with a small delivery. Yet here I am busting my balls to finish at a decent time doing half of his delivery........ Its got to the point now I am fed up being a dogs body but how do I fix this without a fall out in friendship?
I had said to the DOM & line managers that the delivery was too big with extra added but neither did anything about it. We now have a new DOM as of yesterday & I am wondering how to approach this without loosing a friendship & also getting a colleague into trouble with his daily antics.
HELP!!!!!

I would advise you to ignore what he may or may not be doing on his delivery and concentrate on yours. Overtime is not compulsory, they can add half the town onto your walk but that doesn't mean you have to do it.
Start cutting off, every day if you have to. Get the union involved and try to get them to push to get your walk tested

you dont even have to bring your friend into this, the fact that your duty is too long has nothing to do with him really. If you dont want to do the extra 1h 45 everyday then dont do it, maybe tell the managers first you dont intend to do overtime any longer or at least only when YOU feel like it. Then just start following the cut off procedure. I always advise seeing the union rep before taking any action like this, it isnt necessary but it should make things a bit easier knowing you have their backing. A lot of managers wont do anything about a duty thats getting completed even if you keep telling them its too long. They dont care really, work is getting finished, ok they have to pay out a bit of OT but its covered.

What is the exact cut of procedure? As its never really explained. We dont have a union rep in our office the last guy left & nobody wants to take the role on.

you just tell your manager at some point in the morning that you have too much work and will be returning to the office for your finish time and that you think there will be mail still undelivered. They may ask you to take it all out with you and bring whatever you dont deliver back OR they may say what do you think you can get done and then youll probably be expected to get that done, so be careful what you agree to, theres a temptation to agree to too much, so be firm as obviously there must be quite a bit that wont be done by you if its taking you 1h45 extra everyday.
Youve demonstated that you need the extra time everyday since youve been booking the OT and they have been implicit by not arguing over it (im assuming) So if they give you any bother id consider contacting the area union rep. Also you probably should mention to your manager that you just dont want to do the OT anymore rather than it just be a 1 off thing.

I find it staggering you have been in the job over 6 years and don't know how to refuse OT
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Never had to refuse OT in previous delivery office as I was happy to work it when necessary. Only now it has became an issue. There's alot of do's & dont's in Royal mail that are never fully explained...

Work to your time and don't do the OT but as an aside he isn't that good of a best mate to let you struggle whilst he's strutting his stuff.
