Pay and Mod - possibly a silly question...

...but manager and postie interpret it slightly differently.

Postie is due to attend a course at MC approx 45 mins away, usual travel to work is about 5 mins.
Surely the additional 40 mins each way, 80mins in total, is claimable as OT in addition to the mileage rate

However, manager is suggesting that the particular section of the pay and mod agreement only covers being sent to work at (being loaned out to) other offices not for attending training.

Are we right in believing manager is trying to pull a fast one?

Can't comment on the manager for sure but make sure if it is your own vehicle you're correctly insured and claim the 45p/mile travel allowance or take a work van, note the times in & out the DO!

I have been told in the past that I could either claim the Mileage or the Traveling Time....But Not Both.

I'd always claim the mileage (make sure it's the higher rate) as it's tax free. As mentioned clock in to your own DO and that's when your work day starts...... clock back out at your own DO that's when your work day finishes. Anything over I would claim as Overtime. If they don't want to pay you that's up to you how you deal with it. Good Luck!

He claims BOTH, he gets paid from the time he leaves your DO back to your DO and the mileage also.
I have been at meetings, courses etc., and any we go to we claim travelling and mileage.
It is not his fault the course is 40mins away, what would happen if it was 2hrs away would the DOM expect him to use 4hrs of his own time?

To me you are both right.

The manager in saying that the Pand Mod doesn't apply. He is correct it doesn't.

But you are travelling for a work related matter to another business location separate from your normal place of work. Therefore you are entitled to reasonable expenses (mileage claim) and Pay whilst travelling, if you aren't then its must be a voluntary and you can refuse.

If he sent you in a Van would he expect you to pay for the fuel used, or not expect to pay you when you are driving it.

Glad you clarified that TBT. I did mean he would get paid for the traveling, because he'd be "At Work" once he'd left his DO., it's just he wouldn't be claiming anything extra.
