our dom said this week w/c 28th march, is week one. I said no it cant be,... the new tax year doesn't start til 6th april. he was adamant. showing me the paperwork he had in his office and the annual leave forms starting this year from 28th march. I showed him my payslip today, which clearly shows it is week 52. meaning week 1 should start next week. to which he replied ,,,,,RM have a policy which works different to the tax year????(are they above the law) it is based on a 53 week year. WTF. ???? does anyone have a clue what the feck he is on about.

However bizarre this seems, he may be correct your DIM. I have had my first POAL payment taken this week, when I thought it should start week 1 of the 2016/17 tax year. I think it's because at RM we don't work a week in hand.

This is a complete guess but as a year is not exactly 52 weeks, every 5 or 6 years there will be an extra week, making a 53 week year.

There is no law on when companies can start or end their years.

A year is made up of 52 weeks with each week obviously having 7 days, that makes a total of 364 days.

But if you add up the days in all 12 months of a normal year you get 365 days.

In a leap year it’s 366 days

So as somebody else has said, every few years there are actually 53 weeks in pay terms. That has happened in 1995/96, 2001/02, 2007/08 & 2012/13. And before anyone asks, I don’t know when the next one will be.

On the subject of the new financiel year. we should see a change in our take home pay this week. the new £11.000 tax threshold takes affect, but this will almost certainly be offset by the new higher NI contributions. could leave us a quid or two worse off per week . giving with one hand and taking with the other comes to mind

On the other hand the increased NI contributions are being offset by PSE and are actually building up extra state pension that members of the RMPP weren't building up before because of contracting out.
