lots of talk about new delivery strategy

Post by thegreatestfreddy »

Hi...

I am not aware of how this is being officially 'dubbed', but there has been a lot of talk recently in our unit about this 'new efficient delivery strategy' where the letter mail and flat mail is completely sequenced (presumably in a sequenced order across two or three perstops because that is what we get now ... by that I mean rather than box 1 being beginning to end etc. it will be the entire delivery from beginning to end starting in box 1 and ending in box 3) negating the need to touch any of the sequenced mail until out on delivery and loaded onto a trolley of 2 perstops (boxes) ... one being letter mail the other being flat mail and then obviously 'merged' at the door along with any separate manual (parcels/oversized un-machineable mail totalling around 80 such items on an average duty)...

sounds great on paper... indoor prep time being cut and allowing for longer delivery span based on indoor prep savings (presumably savings yet to be calculated indoor prep versus merging on the street)..

all sounds a good strategy to sell to our investors as driving efficiency and presumably cutting jobs and cost as a result of this increased efficiency...

as I said, sounds great on paper... have been speaking to some SOMs recently who, when asked specifically about door to door and how they fit into the strategy, have looked puzzled and have said that this has not been mentioned in this new strategy model...?? surely this cannot of been overlooked...??

the SOMs are not keen already about 'nesting' of door to door so how are these item going to be 'merged' at the door (not incurring any indoor prep time and no prep frames being existent as they will have been disposed of) and being 'merged' in such a way as to not be 'nested'... bearing in mind that some weeks there are 5 or 6 door to door items on a duty??... are door to doors ('our fastest growing and most profitable product stream') going to be scrapped??

Think it was mentioned in another thread that the XMS machines that RM are looking at can sequence the d2ds as well as the flats and letters. I wouldn't be surprised to see d2d delivery being made a duty on it's own

How would making d2d a separate duty make any sense  RM would still make a profit but nowhere near what they do now

Each person doing a d2d only delivery could probably do at least 4 walks worth of d2d over a week

Why would RM pay someone to do a separate d2d duty when they have delivery staff covering the area anyway?

wouldn't be cost effective with D2D's if some rounds only have 1 or 2. If the D2D'S could come in with the walksorted mail at 1/6 a day it would be OK but cant see it happening with the odd shaped D2D's,with pens , Salvation Army collection bags large catalogues etc.

How exactly does letter and flat merging at the door work? Given we only have 2 hands! Serious question by the way! How do we carry 2 separate bundles of mail and then merge the address together at the delivery point?

By having multiple bundles of mail, probably going up your non-dominant forearm, up to the elbow? Stand still; filter letter bundle for next address; filter D2D bundle for next batch; walk to next address and post it through secure letterbox; rinse and repeat?

Didn't Moya introduce this technique in Canada, where D2D was merged on delivery, by having a a D2D and a letter bundle on the go? Or am I getting confused with the USA postal system ?

Im fine with anything RM decide to try and implement, but if these plans mean deliveries take longer to do in practice then I want the union on top of it.

And why would we want to 'merge' out in the wind and rain (on a wet wall maybe?) when it can be done at a bench in a nice warm dry office?

Who makes up these bundles? How big are they? How do they know when to start and stop them?

I get bundles at the moment that I can hardly lift. I certainly couldn't hold two in one hand, even if I could get them out of my bag without them falling apart.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

So you are walking with your non-posting arm fully extended, not actually using your hand to grip at least 1 of the bundles? That sounds both excruciating from a fatigue standpoint and will result in multiple spillages and possibly accidents as a result.

Surely any indoor time saved would have an impact outdoor as the time taken at each door would longer?

The deliveries would have to stay same size at worse.

Also, what about re-di's if the mail isn't touched till outside. Also we get loads of odd missorts in our mech ss it is.
