So just out of intrigue as it seems to be the prime topic on here, back in the 'good ol days' Did people come in early? work for free? rush around? etc, or is all this since the revision

Back in the day people came in early to finish early.
Now we come in early to finish on our time.

Yeah, people used to bomb around like crazy when it used to be job and knock as standard, cutting every corner imaginable. Just do your round and go home at whatever time you'd done it, and that was all allowed. Actually, some deep rural offices I go to still do that now, sort of!

There was no working for free tho, it was always being paid for more hrs than required, in my limited experience of it.

Still is without doubt. When managers are desperate enough they'll basically willingly offer you far, far too much just to get it out of their sight.

I haven't heard of ghosting in a long time but I'm sure it must still go on but on a much smaller scale than in the past. As for starting early everyone started at 5am collected mail from the frame done by night sorters and then went on sorting to a man/woman. In the days of paper billing those of us who had bills and therefore every call was allowed to leave sorting early when told by a manager. You didn't need to rush round, the deliveries were more than manageable, even with the second delivery meant you had an hour plus before your finish time. That was on a town delivery of course, on a rural delivery you would leave about 6.40 and be home by 1030 to 11. Though that was really back in the day.
