Van use on break

Are there any limitations on using the Van whilst on your break?

For example a colleague of mine used his break to pop to B&Q to buy some timber, load it in the van and drop it to his home.

He seems adamant you're ok to do this provided you're not moonlighting for another company but can't see it myself. Any thoughts?

Unless b and Q and his home are on his delivery and the delivery covers a small area I can't see that being allowed surely it would be classed as going off route

So where does your colleague get the idea that his van can be used for personal use ?
Without informing your manager (and asking) what you're about to do in a company vehicle, this is wrong on so many levels.

He's got to think about what he'd say in the event of an accident. He'd have to explain why he had timber in the van and what he was doing taking the van off route. Even with the best union rep in the world, he'd need to be Houdini to wriggle his way out of that one.

No it's not ok he could be suspended or dismissed

Ask yourself this. Just say if you had a company and one of your work forse used the company van for their own use would you be happy.

I've worked in many offices, some of them very lax about the rules, and I'm pretty sure that would be an instant suspension offense in any of them and would probably lead to dismissal.

If he's a mate, advise him never to do it again as getting caught isn't worth the risk. It's not expensive to hire a van or a small trailer if needed, or just pay the delivery fee.

If he's no mate of yours then just say you never heard of him doing such a stupid thing if he gets caught (when he gets caught? Plenty of Joe Public at B&Q to see him loading it into a RM van) - you don't want to end up guilty by association, just because he told you about it or did it with your knowledge.

my advice to all is use your van for your job & nothing else!
you are asking for trouble & as a rep you cannot defend the indefendable.
On a side note, if you do take your break in the van on delivery to eat a sarnie i cannot see a problem with that(aslong as you wash your hands first ).

Before you do anything questionable, ask yourself would you be happy justifying your actions to a manager if need be. If the answer is no, don't do it.

I Have worked for R M for 30 years & it was fine to use van for small trips, but things have changed now & we have had to sign a deceleration to confirm we won't drive off route for doing these sort of things, people are still doing it though & we all know the risk so if we get caught it's going to be tricky to explain,
