Agreement for reserves

Post by geordieboy123 »

It's often stated in posts how reserves are badly treated, if there was to be an agreement for reserves what would you like to see included?

Not being moved on to other duties during the week just to accommodate fixed duty holders perhaps??

Let me digress to a situation to when I was a reserve many years ago....

I signed in on duty X and was then told by a manager mid-morning when I had prepped it, to then go onto duty Z. So I asked the manager why do I have to go on duty Z??

Because the duty holder postie that had been on sick was coming in to work today. Hmmm okay, so why can't they do duty Z?? Because that is not their duty, their duty is duty X. :arrrghhh I just found that managers tend to bend over backwards for duty holders. Like in the above example, if a duty holder comes back to work from sick midweek, he/she is expected to jump straight back onto their round with no regard to who is covering the duty at the time.

As a duty holder myself I can quite understand why some reserves get the short straw - monday/tuesdays off rather than the busier days, being moved onto different sections etc etc But being a reserve is not the issue. In many cases its the bad planning of covering the duties in the office. I really don't think that there should be a need for a postie to be working as a 'spare' and be expected to work at other offices if there is not a duty available on that day....

Why was the duty holder coming in mid morning?

I'd like an agreement where they stop moaning and wait their turn to be duty holders like the rest of us had to! :thumbup

A fair share of long weekends!
How will that work then?
If the duty you get to cover for the week doesn't have a Saturday or Monday rest day then what?

Then reserves should get put on a duty once in a while which has at least a saturday off?

But it no longer works that way Judgee. Since P&L you can lose the chance of a duty to a reletive newcomer. Reserves are treated like Chite, but so is every other Postie really. Even the Favoured few are being exploited if they would only see it.

Whenever someone left, their duty was put up on the noticeboard after 6 months

So what happened to vacant duties being advertised on the noticeboard like they used to years ago?? In this way, it benefits both regular duty holders who fancy a change and the chance for a reserve to get a fixed walk.

Theres no such thing as a reserve contract. We are all employed under the same contract of employment.
Reserves are discriminated against , especially when it comes to Saturdays off ( 1 in 6 ) that's a joke! I ve probably had 3 in 3 years.
We are all paid the same to do the same job under the same contract of employment, why CWU allow this discrimination to proliferate is laudable.
The old school attitude that we ve all gone through it allows management to continue to piss on reserves. We used to send Children up Chimneys but it don't make it right.

Some of us need to step outside the system and take an independent group action citing discrimination. As I ve said many times we are all employed on the same contract.

Fair enough about duty changes, but constantly changing duties so that you never get a Saturday off. In an office where everyone else gets at least One in Six and you have reserves who haven't had a Saturday off in 3 Years, then you need to kick off. We ve all got Families.

If I had the time and some financial security, I bet I can win an Industrial action against the discriminatory aspects of being a Reserve!

We have all being there before is a joke! We have Reserves that are 13 years into the job - and they used to be walkholders. We also have 2.5 years walkholders. Some of the so called we have been there before were never Reserves for that long anyway - and there was a time that people could be made up to FT and walkholders - now, it is virtually impossible with the FT/PT combo in some offices (there is a stream of FT jobs and PT jobs separately; most of them are now PT)

The job is significantly different now; in most offices, there is far less spare staff and far less spare time in the job... Resourcing to workload mainly affects Reserves as Walkholders are rarely troubled by upheaval in offices.

To start with, I can easily win a discrimination act of being underpaid for having a disproportionate number of Tuesdays off thereby working more hours for the same pay as others.

The 2010 agreement allows for reserves to have regular Saturdays off.

Ah your usual twaddle I see! If you have reserves that used to be duty holders then their union reps seriously need sorting out.

The job is significantly different now some aspects better most are worse but resourcing to workload mainly effects duty holders as they are the ones expected to do absorption as reserves are slower and the expectations on their work rate are less. (seen many a reserve leave the d2ds with nothing said, duty holders get hauled over the coals if they do it) :speak to the hand

Love to see you "easily win" your discrimination case do let us know how it goes! :left:
