Correct rural delivery procedure?

Can anyone please tell me or guide me to the correct delivery procedure when on van delivery? ie how much mail i can carry in the front of the van, letters/packets. Thanks

Dont think you can put any mail in the front, you have to work from the back (could be wrong tho)

AFAIK you have to work from the back of the van all the time, most of our Rural guys have a tray on the passenger seat which they work a bundle at a time from.

There's one particular rural duty holder in my unit who quite openly packs the passenger footwell with mail before stacking plenty more on the seat in full view of anyone who happens to be in the yard at the time....including managers. Has done for years.

Managers are fully aware of mail being on the passenger seat, van checks not being carried out, seatbelts not being worn and a hoard of other stuff but they don't care - as long as the mail is going out the door!

I thought all you can have in the front of the van is the mail for your next delivery point.

Last time we had a Security check, the vans were searched for mail in the front.

In vehicles that are not carrying passengers in the front seat/s it is permissible to carry a small quantity of mail, which may include packets (but not SD items) in the cab providing that the items are fully contained inside a mini delivery pouch(MB44)which must be securely fastened to the passenger seat using the passenger seat belt

That was taken from the rmg security rules for drivers booklet handed out in September 2015

I will only have the bundled of mail I'm working from in the front.
Before I knew otherwise I would have a pod at a time in the front and that can't have saved me more than a couple of minutes a day.
Do the job properly. or it might be .

I believe RM changed the rules a while ago so that you can carry a small amount of mail in the front of the van, I think it has to be in a small pouch and be on the floor, you also can't leave it when you get out of the van.......and no packets.
I'm sure someone will either clarify or call me an idiot for imagining it

Thanks for the replies, at least it's put my mind at rest as i only work with the bundle to hand in the front of van. My DOM keeps getting on my back cos i take longer to deliver than the regular duty holder who works with loads of mail in the front. Oh well he can go whistle. Cheers

You're quite right rinky, but in reality .......

Officially you have to use a small pouch (MD44) and thread the seatbelt through the strap, mail should not visible and no Special Deliveries in the front. Got most of the rurals using these or working from back of van. Wouldn't risk it otherwise only takes one thing to go missing and your signing on with todays sacking culture.
