Why do people come in early?!

half hour early unpaid a day = quite a fair bit of money to lose over the year!

Some are just plain selfish, looking for the earliest possible dart! (I particularily love it when they get sent back out with extra 'undelivered' lapsing, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!!)

The rest are bullied into it though intimidation and trying to avoid conflict with management! I've seen normally chilled out relaxed people almost end up crying in a corner.......

IF you come in an hour early and you go home an hour early you've still done the same amount of work IMO. And at the moment that works OK in my Office. We've had a few Temporary DOMs mention "Proper Start Times" and I've explained this. I then tell them if you want to enforce the proper start times for "Everyone" and are going to stand in the door first thing in the morning that's great! I'll be in on time!

Had no takers so far. It's just another BS explanation out of the DOMs hand book of windups! I agree that IF Posties are turning up early, NOT booking in until their Normal Start time (and working for Free) then they're a Bunch of Dickheads and deserve all the extra lapsing that's going!

I dont agree with coming in early.

I feel you have to look at the bigger picture, and it's my job you are ruining also. Becasue of people coming in early, and finishing early, we now lapse between 4-6 duties every day. So because of this, I now have an unmanagable work load, which results in daily confrontations with managers, its a battle of wits every day.

It's fine to run round a duty, when you are fit and relatively young, but as you get older, its no longer possible, and if you have an accident on duty, RM will desert you like a rat from a sinking ship, and take you down the conduct code for not adhearing to health and safety.

If you want to be thinking about yourself, then do the job properly, as its the only way to protect your future job/and or hours.

Agree with everyone so far, selfish, stupid but also some are afraid, afraid of not finishing and having a confrontation with management.

Whilst most people that come in early go on to finish early - it appears that there is no problem or any issues.

However, some people do not really make up much time - what they are really doing is taking things easier and having breaks and chatting and walking around a lot. Some of them just cause problems for those that want to strictly work to their time or those that want to highlight certain problems.

We have part timers that come in about the same time as some full time staff. Why would a PTer come in about the same time as FT staff, go out about the same time or same time if partners and finish the same time? FT gets 7.48hrs and PT gets 6.30hr - and this goes on for years with some partners.
We have one where the FT comes in about his start time - does some of his prep and goes on IPS and his PT partner who comes in before him helps him a little bit whilst he is on IPS - and they both finish at the same!

Some of the part timers of which some are senior members of staff claim that the job could not be done in the time given - and that is their reason for coming in early

Only come in early if the boss is going to pay you for coming in early !


Otherwise why bother?? Coming in early to finish just to finish before everyone else doesn't get you any help from the union when you want some taken off your delivery on a daily basis. So you are only working harder rather than smarter.

The main reason is fear,either of confrontation or of being accused of not being up to the job and being inferior to "John Doe" who can get any round done.

yeh,Like that's going to happen,they tried that in our place to postie that was back well before time .guess what he just laughed and carried on walking ,if they want to do this then that postie in my opinion should of been suspended for it ,but the so called managers just ignore it and try an easier target.

I pretty much agree that coming in early (unpaid overtime) just makes things worse for everybody because while it looks like you and everybody else are coping your just creating a false impression and leads to less new staff . Its best to do things by the book so that management get the proper picture .

If you're getting done early, they will see it. They don't care about the reasons for it; and they may not act straight away i.e sending you back out with mail. But they will eventually add to your duty.
Why can't people understand? - You're rushing round to have more put on your duty. Running round just makes you too tired to do anything when you've finished. Just go at proper pace, claim if you want OT, if you don't, leave in if you can't complete. Just stop running. Please.
