Van Allocation Question

Quicky question fellas.

Firstly some background.

My signed for Duty walk is at this moment being lapsed and the one it's partnered with is currently a HCT Duty.

I have been assigned a singleton Duty and I therefore use my 'old' lapsed Duty van to do this. I have been doing this with the Reps etc knowing for around two months or so.

Now here's the issue, today the Transport office bloke who has been off- whatever his official name is said I can't take that Van take Number 30 (example) because we need the van you been having

One is a old ish combo and the other is a newer combo.

Can anyone tell me why? I asked him and he just said can't have that take that

I am just curious really and not really bothered although it prob comes across as I am! just found it very very strange.

I'm guessing it's favouritism,as long as it's roadworthy I would just use it,and on a plus point it might not get used for SA in the evening so you won't have to fill it up so often.

A sensible company may try to rotate vans onto different duties to reduce mileage on certain vans, ie a van constantly on a 40 mile duty and swapping with one maybe only doing 5 miles a day, that sort of thing over the lifetime of the van with the company may reduce maintenance costs for very high mileage vehicles and keep the sell on value a little higher due to a reduced mileage on some vans

Or a transit on a rural being swapped to a combo during quieter months to save on fuel

That would just be a couple of good examples why it may be done, however I don't think that sort of common sense will be being applied and it's either to keep someone happy with a newer van or out of spite if someone has been pissed off

No, what little attempt is made to keep vans cleans would disappear if we knew the van would be rotated onto someone else before long.
A sensible company would dispose of a totally clapped out van with 120,000 miles on the clock not keep it going at great cost because it's not quite eight years old yet.

There may well be no rhym or reason to the transport persons actions, alternatively it may be that they are classed as different sizes, it may be the duty you do has a van allocated to it and your old van is penciled in to be untilised elsewhere.
If as you say you dont care but are just curious and the person in the locker cant or won't tell you ask their line manager, i mean you just making sure you are not being treated more favourably than others.

Well if you are using the van as a singleton and the newer van is being allocated to a sharing duty then it would make sense as the older van is more liable to break down with a single delivery rather than a double shared delivery. It's certainly something I would have considered when issuing vehicles.
