Delivering yesterdays mail ALSO!!

Hi fellow posties. Some advice needed. Friday just gone, one of our town walks wasnt covered due to lack of staff. 3/4 of the delivery frame was still full, as well as lots of parcels and tracked items left on the frame. I walked into work Saturday morning only to be taken off one delivery and to put on the walk that wasnt covered on the Friday. So i had all of saturdays mail and parcels as well as 3/4 mail/parcels from the day before. Normally the delivery takes about 4 and a half hours but on that Saturday, it took 5 and a half hours. The boss did let me prep the delivery up first thing so i can get out early. I did manage just to finish on time after i rushed around.

Now..... Was that fair from the manager? Should i been paid extra? Should i have received help? Is it ok to deliver mail which took 5 and a half hours?

Any advice or reply would be greatly appreciated.

This happened to me a few weeks back, was put on a failed singleton duty on a Sat and no way would I be rushing around to cover their mistake. I had no probs being put on that duty but I had a start and finish time. By the time the 'new' mail was all prepped I saw what time I had and left the whole bottom row still in the frame (it did finally all get delivered the following Monday). I took all the parcels off that row but made it clear I'd be bringing them back if I ran out of time. I did bring a few back, but delivered the tracked ones.

Just make it clear what time you have and never rush around to help them out, they won't appreciate your efforts - it will just hasten you to ill health.

It use to be in our office that if this happened then you would get extra o/t for the mail that was left from the day before, but now it's a case of if it only takes you say an hour longer to deliver both days mail then the hour's excess is all you get.So for the 3/4 of the frame from the day before it would have been 3h 45m I think I recall, but not anymore.

You said it yourself, you rushed around. Why do you think they put you on it? Because they knew you'd feel pressure and rush around. You should have bargained with them at the time and they probably would have paid you if you guaranteed to complete it, now they will just say you worked your hours and got done so owe nothing.

A similar situation happened at our depot during Xmas pressure, except the OPG arrived to find two days of mail and packets dumped around the frame, felt so sorry for them (never seen a sight like it at work). Covering (not normal) lino informed immediately at duty start ( just gone 0700) of situation and delivery help would definitely be needed, lino then failed to come and see the frame themselves until gone 1100 when OPG finishing off prep...

Every address had 10+ cards/letters (every slot solid) and mountains of packets, OPG agreed to take out ~50% of the walk's letters/cards with no parcels while still expecting to need overtime, which they did by some margin (~1 hour).

Lino moaned, but lino was rather poor at coming to see the situation themselves, until that point OPG was prepping the walk by "normal" standards. OPG paid overtime following week.

If you're put on a failed round at our place you don't have to do the IPS element of the duty, just get cracking on the frame. It usually gets you out of the door a bit early. Not early enough to take up a whole day's extra mail tho, that's why I left a row.

In our office, if we are on a round with 2 days mail, we get 1/2 of the previous days pay for that round.

So if we had a 6 hour duty not go out on the next day you would get 3 hours as "compensation" for double delivery

Wow. Those sorts of deals finished years ago here. Nowadays it's only 'paid for the hrs worked'. The deal is take the money or the mail gets left and it gets done another day. It gets silly sometimes but the mail does always go ... eventually!
