We don't call them shabs here, slopes or slips is the name we use. As in he sloped/slipped them in to a Post Box.

In our office it's the odds n sods of mail that gets brought back from delivery for whatever reason and are normally just dumped by the IPS frame for someone else to sort out the next day.

Haven't heard that term for decades. Used to be used at Mount Pleasant mc 30 years ago for letters that couldn't be sorted - undecipherable, badly addressed, incompletely addressed, etc. They were left on the bay and collected by a 'factotum' who would try to sort them with the help of directories. If the factotum couldn't sort them they would be sent to the 'Blind' duty.
Factotums and Blind duty has since been scrapped and most of these would now go the Belfast Returned Letters Branch.
