Changing barcodes

Image

Over the past few months, we have been asking many of our parcels customers to change the way they label their parcels. We want them to use a 2D barcode (pictured), rather than 1D, or no barcode at all.

We’re asking them to do this as part of our plans to track significantly more parcels by the end of the year.

We have had a number of successes so far with many of our customers making the change, and we are working with Post Office to ensure parcels sent from there are also barcoded in the new format.

Challenge

We have to work with all 20,000 of our customers who are currently putting sticky labels on parcels that haven’t got a barcode.

There will be people who are very hard to convince. And that’s our challenge. We have a great story to tell. We have to convince them to make the changes today, so they can reap the benefits in the future.

Probably will take a few years as some companies are still using the old 1st and 2nd class PPI labels. The address is coded into the 3d barcode

PDAs have a hard enough time trying to scan ye olde worlde 1d bar codes! Especially when they are badly printed / crinkled labels. At least with ye olde worlde bar codes you had numbers you could type into the pda.

If the 2d barcode is badly printed, what then?

Chances are that the normal barcode would be printed badly as well

and all the new label look the same, apart from a small difference top right.

in the last 2 weeks we have had 12 special delivery letters come through the mech with this label on it, and two pre 9 delivery with the normal specials.

whoever thought of making all the labels identical needs their head looking at.

It is all shite. I sent a letter via Special Delivery yesterday which has not arrived today. Customer Services tell me it will arrive tomorrow, they hope...a day late, and I can claim compensation for delay. I see some Chinese packets with two or three barcodes on them and scan whatever I see, but if Moyà gets her way and everything is scanned a normal 500 delivery point round will have to be reduced to less than 300, if we are to complete in time, or we are going to charge a huge amount of overtime.

" Normal 500 delivery point round "

Jeez we fight to get on the easy 878 delivery point round in ours.

But I think his point is when it's badly printed at least the old barcode had the number written below which you could manually type in where as with the 2d ones it won't be

I wouldn't be surprised to see walks in DOs eventually being either letters/large letters/d2d only or parcels only. The d2ds might even be a separate duty eventually which could be done by a part timer

These barcodes simply contain adress details and are not to be confused with SD, RD or Tracked items barcodes - so there is no need to worry about the lack of the tracking number below it - there isn't one.

A SD, RD or Tracked item will still have another barcode that has the printed number below it.

I'm guessing the new barcodes shown above are part of the new system that will be incorporated into all callers offices where a scanable address may be easier to use than typing in the details manually and the whole tracking from post to delivery.

It's possibly also used by packet sorting machines

Read the original post, they want companies to replace the old barcode with the 2d ones, there won't be the old barcode on the packets

The original post doesn't say that at all.
This is to replace labels that currently have no barcode at all and thus at the moment cannot be tracked.
SD, RD and Tracked items already have a barcode and can be tracked (although to a much lesser extent with RD).

I don't believe one person delivers to 878 addresses. Is it huge blocks of flats with doors all next to each other?
