Daily Mail Volumes

Does anyone know (or can point me in the right direction to find out) the daily mail volumes in the Royal Mail network ?

What are the busiest days of the week, in terms of mail volume, and what are the quietist ?

What are your experiences ? Over the 6 days, how would you rank them ?

i'll not post my experience first as I don't want to influence people one way or the other.


To make it more precise, lets say the busiest day = 100. Lets say that the busiest day is Monday - so Monday=100.

Lets say the next busiest day is Tuesday. Lets say Tuesdays mail = 95.

Next busiest is Wednesday - Weds.=76.

Etc Etc

How would you, in your experience, rate the 6 days ?

our office completes most days because of the numpty runners who will do some overtime after they have completed, or people that will start an hour before their time in order to complete or we get a lot of managers come over to complete the walks.

being that we are a small DO of 27 walks and running with 6 vacancies, it is amazing that we don't fail every day what with the double absorption that we are doing as well.

Personally ( and being the Union Rep, I only ever work my hours and nothing more. ( I have also been badgering for over six months for our staff number to be increased, but as usual it has fallen on deaf ears. the last two people we took on were Wed - Sat contracts PT and one of them has already left the job )

Might as well throw my hat in the ring - and I have to say that the above is just about spot on IMO.

Only change I've seen over the years (that I can remember at the moment anyhow) is that Saturday used to be very quiet - I think this had something to do with RM paying us double time overtime at the time on Saturdays.

Monday has picked up in volume a lot the last few years - definitely as busy as Saturday, maybe a touch busier now.

That's because 2nd class letters posted on a Saturday is now treated as 1st class and we get it for delivery, along with the 1st class, on Mondays! Simples!

Id say the above is spot on, sometimes thursdays are harder than wednesdays but packets seem to be light for me tuesdays only, also totally agree with the saturdays, i struggle to complete my duty even not taking my break and if west ham are 12:45 kick off i can guarantee it will be a s**t day in more ways than one lol

Monday/Tuesday are supposed to be less busy than wed-sat BUT last Monday was mega busy

we had election letters for every door and the gaffer wanted them all delivered in just 1 day (whereas we would probably have got a full week to deliver them in the past).


Personally, I wouldn't believe anything a manager says about the mail traffic forecast, its just guesswork at best. And even if it is busy, so what? They are not going to willingly take the collapse off us like they should do, so that Postie's go well over their time or rush round and end up making mistakes because of it.....

The same mistakes and customer complaints that managers are trying to reduce ensue because Postie's are tired and morale is low

I don't really understand this comment.

A half the volume of mail on Tuesday compared to Wednesday doesn't mean that you need half the amount of time to complete. It doesn't work like that.

I believe The Mail Volumes are sent to the DOMs every morning............ Some that like to keep all their White Boards full of baffling information actually write them up. They need to know if it's above the "Model Day/Week" (God knows when that was) in order to tell you that you're Lapsing/Absorbing/Flexing

Try asking your DOM, when you've finished prepping your duty, if it's A Busy Mail Volume Day. If he says "It's Officially Busy" consider if you have enough time (Within your Duty Span) to deliver any extra Mail. If you can't just tell him you haven'y got the time to Lapse or Absorb. See what he says.

we have less mail on tuesdays BUT we also have 1 hour shorter days on tuesdays than wednesdays, and also we have a 20-30 min work time learning session every tuesday, so the fact the mail is less on a tuesday doesnt mean we necessarily are finishing earlier than our scheduled times.
