Why would we need one? According to dingo DW has more or less been fulfilling the role whilst BH has had a 14 year holiday at our expense. Things are so narrow within the organisation who knows who would be able to fill the post. I will say though I'll bet there's some arse licking going in the corridors of power. I mean we've already seen one sycophant throw his cap in the ring. It'll look like Aintree on Grand National day all the acolytes jockeying for the next job up the ladder.

The General Secretary primary role as defined in the Union Rule book is the lead negotiator of the CWU. Apart from on one occasion in 2003 during the unofficial dispute Billy has chosen not to involve himself in negotiations. Past General Secretaries such as Alan Johnson , Alan Tuffin and Tom Jackson have all been involved in negotiations when holding the role as General Secretary.

If Dave is elected , Ray Ellis will hold the position of Acting DGSP until 2016 when the election of a new DGSP will be held.

For now there is only one real election and that is who do you want to be the General Secretary of the CWU for the future with all the issues our members are facing in work and in wider society ?

That was fine when we were almost exclusively a postal union but now the union although dominated in numbers by postal members is a mixed bag of different companies. The GS needs to represent all of the members of the CWU both politically and industrially and if we are to be involved in an ongoing fight to protect our terms and conditions I want a lead negotiator whose mind is focussed on the job not thinking about some Global Union conference in Bali or Ed Miliband's hairstyle.

To us ordinary postal members the DGS(P) position is by far the most important and if Dave is so good at it why is he running away, why are you endorsing that and whose name is in the frame to replace him?

I don't think he wants to win.
I think he wants to hand over to Dave and at the same time continue the pretence of democracy. HQ gets its favoured son in place without it looking too much like a coronation and the members get an election..of sorts.

Fish this union is not punching its weight politically on issues which effect our members lives ranging from agency workers , zero contract , poor wages , housing shortage to employment tribunals , privatisation , unfair competition and attacks on terms and conditions including pensions.

The TUC is weak and too many trade union leaders blindly follow the Labour party who pander to the rich.

Whilst it is important is that in todays political environment you need a strong industrial and a equally strong political voice.

Does Billy think he can win ? Of course he does , he has support in telecoms and of course he will get some in postal branches. Remember he has bought the election forward by a year and the original timetable set proposed by him was Nominations opened 12th January , Nominations closed 3rd february and ballot from 17th February and ballot closed 10th March. It was a move to stop a debate and rush the election process.

The NEC amended the timetable to run from Nominations open from 16th February nominations close 10th March and ballot opened on 24th March and closes on 14th April.

With regards to the DGSP role and who would stand if Dave got elected then I believe it will be a steeple chase with Andy Fury , Ray Ellis , Terry Pullinger and Bob Gibson all standing and maybe others will also throw their hat in the ring.
