HCT empty post box on the way around.

The latest idea is to try and get walking posties with HCT to do a relief collection whilst out on delivery.

Trouble is some rounds have 3 pillar boxes on route and they are going to expect someone to push that around along with the mail and then back to the office.

Anyone doing this already ?

I think it is unlikely you would have to empty 3 post boxes. There still has to be a late collection within half a mile or something.
And given that the boxes targeted for delivery collection are supposed to have less than 50 items, even if you had to empty all 3 that would be a maximum of 150 items.

The big question is, do they have time to do the box emptying on top of everything else they currently do, if they deliver properly and still finish at their contract time?

I think the idea behind this is to start us later and do away with the afternoon collections.

They are talking like this is common in other offices and its just us not doing it.

We used to do this in the 80's/90's on way back from 1st delivery

Yes but in the 80/90 we were collecting mail posted after final evening collection for a large percentage of boxes this will be the one and only collection, some duties i covered i would return with a small bundle, others would fill a delivery pouch, and as i said this was from 5 or 6pm the previous evening, not from 9 or 10 am the previous day.

Early box collections have/will be added because of falling mail volumes,not because of early finishers.

A vast amount of the boxes which will be emptied only in the mornings will only have a few letters in them if we are being honest?

We just started emptying them this week, maximum three but most rounds have just one. No big deal really....only a couple of letters in each box if any!

The biggest problem I can see with this is the control of the keys.
What happens when one goes missing? Or will there be a proper signing in/signing out process?

Do they give you a separate pouch to put the mail in?

No, no seperate pouch but you could ask for one from the locker I guess, keys are controlled in and out just like van keys, to be honest it's one of the better business decisions the company has made for a long time, two days in a row now I have gone to my box and it's been empty and the rest of the office don't get much more so really was a waste of fuel and manpower getting theses emptied by collections as we are already going past them.

Did you have to face the mail on the street. ?

Just gets banded up , kept separate to your other mail, then on return to office it gets posted in a letterbox that has a late collection. We are not made to stick to times as long as they are emptied after 9 am. We scan a collection bar code on our PDA and this tells you which box it is.
