Re-pick

Hi, I'm relatively new to the royal Mail so have never gone through a re-pick. We have one coming up and apparently we have to write a letter to one of the managers/ union reps regarding a walk we would like to be selected for. I'm just wondering exactly what do I put in this letter is it just a simple case of I would like to put my name forward and that's it?

Who told you you have to write a letter?
Were they pulling your leg?

The walks are put on a board, the most senior goes first and picks a duty, you then go down the seniority list.
Nobody to my knowledge has ever had to write a letter.

last couple of repicks we've had, you are given a sheet of paper with you're first, second, and third choice of duty. and depending on you're seniority, will probably get one of you're choices. as you are new, and way down the seniority list, you probably will just be left with the crap or end up vicing duties.

I thought the same as you first time i tried signing up for a walk. I wrote a lovely little letter saying why i should be picked for all the different walks i was applying for (3 or 4 different ones). Must have been half a page of A4 at least.
The next day i asked a work mate what he had put and he said all you needed to do was put your name, pay number and the walk you are applying for on a piece of paper and give it to a manager. I felt like a right numpty

So i'd think all you need to do is the same. Different offices might have different rules though?

Is it a whole office 're-pick' or is it some of the vacant duties going up on the wall?

My office had our last repick due to the revision last january still not signed off but that's a different story. For us picking a duty we had all the duties showing route maps on boards in a conference room and we were called down one at a time in seniority order. If it's just a vacant duty being advertised just your name and pay no and saying you want to apply for such duty will be sufficient for a letter application.

Does anyone actually "Sign" for a Duty anymore? We tend to say someone's "Signed" for it (and they are often Delivering it) but then something happens in the office and....Surprise Surprise that guy is moved onto another Duty. Often with the BS "Well you're the only other person in the office that knows that Duty"!

If you haven't worked in the private sector before (and I have) then you my friend, may well be in for a nasty shock........as the real world of commerce and business (RM can no longer be regarded as a public service) moves in cut-throat ways

In my experience, allowing people the 'right' to never get moved off their duty elevates their feeling of being untouchable.

Well there is actually. I was thinking about this and I reckon that we are going to have to apply formally for duties in the future,which will be on a suitability,not seniority basis,rightly so as well. It's about time stupid ,archaic practices were stopped in this job.

Would postie A be given a flat terrain duty because they wheeze a lot if they have to walk uphill as they smoke 40 a day?
Would postie B be given a duty with a nutcase on it because they are the hardest mofo in the DO?

In what way is anyone more suitable for a duty?

The duties are all equal? Where does that happen,nowhere I have ever worked in this organisation is that the case and believe me I am no one office wonder.
As for the workings , I don't have any specific ideas, that is for greater minds than mine to work out. There no doubt will be a set criteria. From what I can see at the minute ,it's either based on seniority, if you do overtime on a regular basis, or are a management pet . Those of us who don't tick those somewhat dubious boxes ,tend to lose out somewhat, I feel.

And surely DOMs might as well be selected on a seniority basis because 'suitability' hasn't worked very well.
