Yes London's critic has an apology to make about housing prices. I watched a programme about housing in London. It showed a terraced property and I would hesitate to call it a house more a corridor. The price at auction reached £245,000 and didn't reach it's reserve price, I'm not sure if it was 2 or 3 storey but the issue was the width of the house was just 75" (6'3"). I couldn't believe it, my hall is 78" wide or 6'6" and believe me mine is just a 1930s semi and nothing special in that regard.

How on earth can people afford houses and flats there?

i moved out years ago would never been able to get on the housing ladder otherwise anyway would not be able to live in london now its bad enough working there.

Well it's not just buying a house the rents are absolutely ridiculous. A developer had 66 flats for sale to English buyers and had put aside another 35 for sale only to overseas speculators, mainly Chinese I might add.

On my days off I sometimes watch Homes under the hammer and I've seen what people pay at auction for London properties and the profit they make when selling them on or the ridiculous rents they charge when letting.
No wonder young people can't get on the housing ladder.
The rich just keep on getting richer.

At the other end of the scale you see people buying houses for a pittance in parts of northern england or Wales. Huge difference between north and south.

Either they bought years ago before prices went beyond belief.
Or they live in Godawful places like Dunstable and have to commute in.
Or they take advantage of things like shared ownership.
Or they have a mortgage 9x their joint salary and they work every hour God sends to try and pay it off all the time praying mortgage rises don't rise.

Although saying that this government is slowly trying to cleanse London of council tenants by increasing the rents every year until they reach the same rents that are being paid in the private sector

Those who live 15 to a 2 bed flat and share the astronomical rent and get benefits for children living abroad.

I don't know how younger/newer RM employees can afford to live in London. The older ones might have bought their homes 30 years ago when the price for an ordinary 3 bed terraced house in a rougher area like Hackney was around £30k, or 3 times an annual wage.
Now that house will cost more like £700k+. I bought my small flat 16 years ago, but I wouldn't be able to afford to buy it now.
Some of my colleagues moved out to places like Southend and Milton Keynes. But they were spending a lot of their wages on fares.
I guess those who can get council or housing association properties can get help with their rent through working credits, though these might get squeezed out by the cap on housing benefits.
Some of the single men lived in rented single rooms.
The housing situation is getting more and more difficult, although the politicians talk about it nothing much gets done in reality.
