bit of a rammy going on in our DO that no-one wants to sort out.

Quite a few of the staff in our place qualify for extra weeks off due to the 15/20 years service rule.

Problem is, they want to take them all during the summer meaning less space for anyone else to get time off. Situation has got worse this year due to several more staff triggering the extra weeks holiday. I was led to believe that any extra leave entitlement could only be dished out once everyone else had been given their own standard entitlement. We end up have guys carrying weeks forward every year whilst the guys who get 5/6 weeks total entitlement get to take them all.

Get the rest of the staff to buy the extra days and really piss them off

Here's how it works at our place. First everyone picks weeks 1 and 2. Then everyone picks weeks 3 and 4. Then after those slots are filled everyone who is entitled to it (either purchased or long service, no difference) picks weeks 5 and 6. If anyone tried to book their weeks 5 and 6 as being during the summer holiday time they'd have no chance at all of any of those slots being available.

Our office chooses by 2 weeks then 2 weeks then remaining weeks then days, that way everyone gets a chance of summer holidays

When people get more weeks leave because of length of service this becomes standard leave not extra leave. It doesn't matter how holidays are sorted out there will always be some people who think it's not fair, you can't please all the people all the time. Maybe they should go back to the old system of summer/winter leave where you could only book half of your allocated leave in the summer months and the other half had to taken in the winter months. So if you were entitled to 4 weeks a year it would be split 2-2 and for people entitled to 6 weeks it would be split 3-3. Then any a/l that was purchased was booked after that.

We have everyone divided into groups. Group 1 gets first pick one year, next year they goto the bottom of the list and group 2 gets first pick. Next year group 2 goes to the bottom of the list and group 3 gets first pick, etc, etc

something tells me that is the best/fairest way to go about it..........however.

guys in our place think that because they get an extra week or two, when others pick week 1 and 2 during the summer, they can pick weeks 1,2,3 and even 4 when it's their turn.
Cue guys at the bottom of the list getting the dregs when it comes round to them, or even worse having to carry forward.

That sounds like they are using seniority when selecting leave. They are not allowed to. My emphasis

Note also that seniority will not be used for leave selection (except possibly to allocate employees
into rotating groups) once local leave selection processes have been reviewed. This will be
necessary to conform with the criteria set out in the agreement on Annual Leave: “all
employees will be included on an equal basis”.

we all get 2 wks pick apr-sep & 2 wks oct-mar, all into a set divided group where as 1 above states, you move down a "pick" each year,
anyone who gets/buys extra then picks an available week when 1st lot is sorted

we are only allowed to pick 2 weeks summer then 2 weeks winter until pick is done - the rest is then booked wherever the spaces are left

This way everyone gets at least 2 weeks in summer
