Hi-Tech scanners at DO entry/exits?

Post by bustedflush »

This week was have had some space-age looking scanners/detectors fitted above the exit/entry double-doors to the van park. A lino told me mail and door-dustbins are being randomly chipped and then monitored on the way out. He cited two reasons: firstly door-dustbins can be monitored as being taken out correctly on or before their due days and secondly, mis-sorts spotted after the loop they should have been delivered on when the postie is out can now be spotted being 'smuggled' back in to the DO and placed back in the manual sorting frames or the round's frame for redelivery next day.

So, do any of you already use this system in your DO's (i.e. is this old hat for some) or are we here at the forefront of the latest 'Big Brother' scheme from RM?

Be interested to know. :cool

Well, I wish it were. Someone on light duties saw them (Managers) messing about with cards walking through them, checking LED's flashing on the scanner and monitoring from an office PC that's just been installed. Whether it is bluster or they will actually be diligently monitored and operated remains to be seen.

Do you mean the RFID exciters? These have been around for years. It is a regulatory requirement that we have our quality of service independently tested and the RFID exciters are used to track test letters through the network so they can see if for example they arrived at a DO but didn't go out until the next day

we have them in our office also, yes they can spot mis sort test letters coming back into the office after being out for delivery, but they cant tell which walk they were on as the test letter recipients are not know to the DOM, they could theoretically work it out by checking who was coming through the door on cctv at the time the scanner picked it up, but not supposed to be doing that

Possibly Phil. I just don't know what it's for. I can see no reason why its use can't be extended beyond what you stated though, if the latest fad decrees other mail and d2d's should be chipped/monitored. I guess time will tell...

i'd like to be a fly on the wall in the many lino's office when they are on their 4 hour break, although i'd probably die of boredom. they waste so much time doing nowt on these pc's.
Why are lino's paid full-time ??

They supposedly detect the sticky barcodes on letters (you know the ones you have to peel off to read the address!)

Easy to test, find a sticky barcode and walk past the detector with it then chuck it in the bin and walk back inside. If the red light on the detector flashes on your way out and not on your way in then if is obviously doing something.

Miss-sorts don't have to be ''smuggled'' back into the office anyway... surely as long as you don't have time to do them at the end of your duty and you correctly endorse them as a miss-sort you are quite within your rights to bring them back for redelivery the next day.

Sorry but got to call bullshit on this.

Those barcodes are added by a Tops2K sorting machine and are sticky paper only, hence the printed barcode on them. Were they RFID then the machines wouldn't need a bar code would they.

The scanners red light comes on whenever something moves within its range. Every entry/exit to a RM building should have one. In a MC they're above every door off the processing floor and by every vehicle bay to pick up RFID signals for the test mail audit trail.

What's more they aren't high-tech.
