Changeover

I am do Changeover on Wednesday and want to know what to expect. Someone at work say it is 3 hours driving test. And I will get paid 45 pounds for the test.

I don't want to face driving for 3 hours in Rush hour peak time with having to listen to instructor (I am deaf) and migraine.

Hi I had mine in january all I did was do van checks with the guy and drove round in a transit for a couple of hours doing a couple of maneuvers. just don't do anything stupid try not to speed. when I got back to the office he went through my driving telling me where I could improve and stuff and I filled in a questionnaire and that was it.

Not a driving test as such it's more of an assessment to make sure you are safe to drive a RM van.Mine lasted about 3 hours but we had regular stops along the way where the instructor discussed my driving and pointed out what I was doing well and what wasn't so good. As long as you listen to his advice and don't keep doing the same mistake you should be ok.

You do not get paid any extra for doing the test.

I doubt very much it will be a solid 3 hours of driving. Mine was a little 45 min drive about followed by backing into the bay. You'll probably get paid standard OT for the length of the time it takes.

And if you feel a migraine attack coming on tell the instructor and finish the test.

The guy I got seemed like a boring, by the book type. Wasn't having any banter at all, so it dragged in.

At the end he gave me a medium risk rating and I had to fill out a questionnaire about the changeover. You can be scored low, medium or high risk, but the majority end up with a medium apparently.

I'm still not allowed to drive the LWB vans despite doing the changeover. Is there another test for the bigger vans?

Yes you have to do a seperate test for the bigger vans.

Mine lasted 3 and half hours. As an old boy I found it quite traumatic. Made to feel as If I'm a crap driver, but in the end assessed as low to medium risk. An hour after wondered why I got so stressed. Good luck anyway, sure you'll be fine.

Didn't do it well, but I can drive small van but not big van. It is too much of jump from my car to van without getting used to it. I am not impressed with the format. Didn't get on with the instructor :(

I'm going to have to do mine soon i guess with our revision coming up. Not that bothered but i've only driven a small clio in my 3 years since passing my test. Think i'll be alright in one of the small vans but if i go out in the big ones i've go no chance.

If someone has done the changeover in a little van but drives a big one quite often who gets it in the neck if something goes wrong? I see this happening almost every day.

What'd you do wrong? I have a suspicion a lot of these instructors count on failing for the bigger vans so they can get repeat work. They get paid a hefty sum for 3hrs work.
