becoming a manager
I have been asked if I would like to be a manager. What are the pros and cons? I have been a postman for 10 years just fancy a change, walking the streets is getting harder when you get to my age.

Firstly is this a managers "buddy" ?
If you become a proper manager you will need to be totally flexible and work at any office at a moments notice including delivery work, the key word really is flexible. Its not for everyone (not me anyway) but if you fancy the change then why not go for it.

Its not a manger role, its acting when RM want it.

The problem with being an acting manager is that 1 week you are handing out instructions to your colleagues and the next week you are back to a postman and working alongside your colleagues. Not a great situation to be in but in your acting role if you are fair and understanding and not influenced by a substantive manager who has been brainwashed on how to deal with people then you could be a breath of fresh air to the business.

I would think long and hard before taking such a step. I turned them down as I don't like the management/leadership style. Far too autocratic, no formal training and they don't usually move you to a different office or section from your colleagues. Also at some point there will be a management cull, probably not at the operational level but certainly above, and this will have an indirect effect on Line Managers and DOMs as in my opinion their responsibilities are being downgraded for a reason, and that's probably so they can introduce Team Leaders.
On the good side, they pay is better and so are the bonuses. If you become a good leader you will have the backing of your posties and if you have the commitment you could be a good champion for changing the culture in management and indirectly the adversarial culture between management and posties.
Its a decision only you can make, but I would try to get honest opinions from friendly managers and failed ones, not about if you would make a good manager, but if the step up is worth it.

To even think about becoming an acting manager makes me feel you are an unstable person unable to make decisions, perhaps the worst decision you will ever make while at R.M if you decide to take the leap to the dark side.

From what I've seen you'll be a fool if you go ahead. No matter how nice you are, the current role of a manager would never allow you to change any delivery office for the better.
