Van checks

We've heard might have to start daily van checks that WCM have come up with a new list has this been agreed with the union or can we ignore it thanks guys

You should be checking your van daily anyway.

The RM daily van checks are pretty basic and should only take but a few mins to look the van over. Ignore them at your own risk

the checks you/we are required to perform are in the front of your log book.
duty check if you are not the first person to use the van, mostly visual. 4 mins
daily check to be performed by first person to use the van that day one of the most overlooked responsibilities is that this person must also ensure there is enough fuel for the day. 7 mins
weekly checks generally by the first person to use the van. 12 mins
times are a rough guestimate but should be shown or allocated on 318, its all time

Instead of relying on the front of the log book I would suggest that you ensure as drivers that you have all read and understood, (and preferably carry), the Royal Mail Drivers Manual. Pages 16 to 29 instead of just a listing what to check expand upon those and show the difference between Duty, Daily and Weekly Checks.

However LTB 815/13 National Agreement Reached said

Actions to deliver cultural change including a review of all existing employee engagement initiatives, to put in place new and more progressive initiatives that support shared objectives and a mutual interest culture. This review will include WCM.

So I have no idea where we are except between a rock and a hard place.

yes i will check the use by date on my can of coke

I check my CAN daily before I open it to see if it is cool enough and at least 5% !

I've been given a drivers manual and a form to sign to say I have read it. I don't have time to read it, rarely complete my duty let alone read a book and I'm not reading it in my time.

your working hours are time to read it. Refuse to sign it unless you are given duty time to read and understand it, if that means cutting off and bringing more mail back then so be it. It would be foolish to sign for something you havent read.
