Work to rule
I'm planning on starting a work to rule after being shafted the other day by a manager enforcing exact rule(my fault for coming in earlier) I know not to mention that I'm working to rule but wanted to know what I can get away with as a van driver on a rural.

Re: Work to rule
U dnt have to be as drastic as work to rule, just do your job properly, start on time, finish on time,20% d 2 ds every day whether going there or not, take your meal releifs,do van checks, seat belt every call, work from back of van only what is permitted in the front,no cutting corners when out on dely u will soon have them panicing, but be prepared for some pain as u will paint a big target on your back, just make sure ur whiter than white or they will hang u out to dry, wear correct uniform, have your id and posting peg on u at all times as well as hazard card folder as im sure they will come out to observe u,do it how they want it and gd luck

Re: Work to rule
Just add to " Broughts" summing up. Drive to the road conditions in accordance with " defensive driving" Record and report all addresses that you regard to be a hazard there must be tons on a rural delivery. Muddy roads, ruts etc overhangibg trees that restricts visibility
, slow moving tractors, combined harvesters rural animals hedgehogs, foxes etc. and vulnerable persons sites risk assessment such as schools, nurseries, old folk homes etc.

Re: Work to rule
Good advice from Broughts. I have had a few issues over the years and I tell managers that they expect me to do the job properly, not cutting corners, no door stepping etc. So don't work to rule, that can be seen as a negative attitude, but "doing the job properly" is part of their T & C's . good luck.

Re: Work to rule
Hope this goes well Django, wish more people would get on the 'doing the job properly' train...
As others have said, be very careful, if you really do do the job by their rules you will become a major pain in the arse to your manager, and they will try what they can to show that you are underperforming, or warrant a conduct code etc...
You know all this anyway, but yeah the hazard reporting one mentioned above is a good one too....

EDIT>>>> broughts, what is this 'work from back of van only what is permitted in the front' , what exactly is permitted in the front at any time....

Re: Work to rule
The rule is actually a small amount of mail it doesn't specify one bundle, the pouch should also be secured to the passenger seatbroughts wrote:U can have a small pouch in the front with one bundle and relivant packets as lond as not on show and always take bundle with you

It takes a brave individual to decide to do the job how they're told to do it (especially when you know it can't be done)
Good luck

Re: Work to rule
I'm sorry but you shouldn't have been coming in early in the first place this is the reason offices are in the mess they're in.
All the early starters, runners, etc craving up the job to finish and then they cry when given work for coming back early!

Re: Work to rule
He's hardly crying...don't have a go at people who have realised what's going on and are trying to push back, it's the ones who persist that you need to persuade...
I wish I had the balls to do the job *properly*...I don't go in early, I always have my break, I never go over my time, I refuse lapsing and have the associated aggro regularly...
I don't know if I could stand the daily confrontation and harrasment that would result from 'doing the job *properly*'

Re: Work to rule
isn't work to rule the exact same has doing the job properly ?
and if EVERY postie did this then their/our shares would be worth an aip'ny more than our colleague shares we owned.
i wonder how many folk will still be here in 3-5 years to cash in?
i've got my doubts for me and i still love the job itself, fed up of the muppet show day in day out

Re: Work to rule
working to rule is a form of industrial action, and you are not permitted to threaten it, or carry it out without a mandate from the union. You'd get in trouble for telling your DOM you were working to rule.korky wrote:isn't work to rule the exact same has doing the job properly ?
Doing the job properly is following the rules as set by your employer, and that's obviously not a conductable/dismissable action.
(essentially it's the same thing ;) )
