Return to Work Discussion

Post by Equus1967 »

Hello everybody,

I have had a Stage 1 procedure triggered by 4 absences, but due to poor organisation, I have only had 1 Return to Work Discussion with 1 set of paperwork to confirm this. The other 3 were overlooked.

Having raised this issue with my manager, he claimed that the Return to Work Discussion no longer needs to be documented.

I find this difficult to believe as it leaves Royal Mail exposed to a deluge of employees claiming that they did not have the discussion.

Does anyone know if this is the case, and also, if not, can I still be issued with a Stage 1 warning if I did not receive the Return to Work Discussion?

Many thanks.

It's kind of in your favour these mess ups, don't bring them up the now, as if and when you get to stage 3 then the fact rm have not followed correct procedure could save your job, getting him to do them properly from the start is not necessarily in your interests

stage 1 is the first step on the absence procedure as far as i know, unless theres a stage 0.5 or something

Also yes its not what he asked but its advice how to deal with the situation which may be a better way of handling it rather than causing a fuss over a stage one, save it and use it to cause a fuss over a stage three in the future, could save his job in the long term rather than just getting the manager to follow the correct procedures in the short term

A stage 1 is issued when you have triggered 4 absences in a 12 month period. Under the current absence procedure you should have received an informal interview that your absence record is giving cause for concern. Having not received BTW interviews at each absence will be an argument should you unfortunately tote up a 3rd stage absence. BTW interviews should be conducted within 24 hours of you returning to work. Remember that at A stage 1 to issue a stage 1 is not manadory and is at the discretion of the manager. Should you trigger a stage 3 where dismissal is considered you will put forward the circumstances that triggered a stage 1 and if successful will take it to appeal stage.

Stage one starts when you decide to accept the job offer

Thanks for your input people, from what you guys are saying it seems that I should accept the Stage 1 then wait to see if it becomes a Stage 3 & then raise it as an issue?

If you haven't signed your stage 1 warning and they can find no documentation of this, you're not on a stage 1.
They HAVE to have proof. Don't listen to your DOMS bullcrap.
