asked to work my day off

I was asked on Tuesday if i wanted to work my day off , which was today ( Thursday ) . When i turned up this morning i was told i was not needed, gutted to say the least. As far as i am concerned i have lost a days pay , my DOM offered me an hours pay for making the effort, should i accept this or take it further ?

they have in theory lost a day off, i'd be pretty pissed off if i was asked to work then told to go home after getting up at ?am
what if they had paid child care?

quick update. After speaking to my union rep , he brought it up with the managers and area manager , who , reluctantly , agreed i was out off pocket and as a gesture of goodwill have given my half a days leave . Result.
