Changes to Royal Mail deliveries in Yeovil area should be 'minimal' officials say

CHANGES to the way post is delivered in the Yeovil area came into force this week.

The second stage of a revision, which is a part of a nationwide plan, began on Monday but Royal Mail officials have assured people the alterations are minimal.

Homes in the town and surrounding villages have received letters alerting them of changes to the service.

In the letter Graeme Tyers, Yeovil delivery sector manager, said the changes were “necessary” to keep deliveries efficient and services cost-effective.

It said deliveries would continue for longer throughout the day but the time homes receive mail could be later or earlier depending on new routes.

He said: “These changes may mean someone different from your local office will be delivering to you.

“However, I’m confident all of my team will continue to provide the reliable, friendly service you have come to expect from us.”

On Tuesday a spokesman from Royal Mail insisted the alterations were not major.

He said: “There will be no job losses as a result of this revision. Customers will still receive their mail six days a week.”

He said the move was rolled out in two phases, the first of which came into force on January 27.

He said: “This involved removing bicycles from the service. Deliveries within a mile of the sorting office will use post trollies.

“Postmen will cover a larger delivery area, but will go around in pairs in vans. This is safer and more effective.”

He said changes on Monday meant delivery routes were altered slightly.

The service has already been revised in other areas such as Wincanton and Langport.
